Message from Mrs. Kirkpatrick

Thank you for joining us for Back to School Night. We had a wonderful turn out last week and are glad our virtual environment was able to support so many families safely. We hope that our virtual sessions met everyone's needs to learn a little more about instruction, structures and the support your child will have this school year. Education is a teamwork approach and we look forward to partnering with you this school year to support your child(ren).

We continue to have some later buses arriving and also getting students home in the afternoon. While, we are seeing some improvements over the past week, we still have room to improve. Transportation has a lot of new driver applicants in the month of August, but it will take time to interview, train and assess candidates. Thank you for your patience as we continue to work with transportation to provide safe and reliable transportation.

Kiss N Ride - As an important reminder, please do not turn right into the parking lot during the height of arrival and dismissal. We can create a faster flow of traffic and safer arear for walkers and drivers by going down to turn around. We are working as fast as we can to load and unload children and ask for your patience.

I want to close this message with a shoutout to our lunch volunteers. We have a phenomenal and dedicated group of parent volunteers that have jumped right in to support our outdoor lunches. There is nothing simple about supporting 200 students at school during a lunch shift, and the combined efforts of staff and volunteers has allowed us to accomplish the difficult task of spreading out students to increase of mitigation measures.  Thank you parents! We can't do what we are doing without you.

Thank you,
Stacy Kirkpatrick

Back to School Night Information

Recordings for BTSN can be found on Schoology. The main session is shared in our Chesterbrook Families course.

Mitigation Measures & Updates

We made great progress last week with spacing students out during lunches thanks to our additional parent volunteers.  Volunteers have gone through background checks and are working hard to support daily lunches. We are incredibly lucky to have dedicated parents providing precious time to support our students and staff.

Playground Mitigation

Our teachers will be working with students about outdoor mask wearing- when masks should be worn and when it is okay not to wear them. When playing closely with other children (within 6 feet) makes should be worn. This is mostly seen when children are playing with others on the playground equipment.

Classroom Spacing

We continue to work on classroom spacing during all aspects of instruction. The goal is to keep students at a 3' distance from peers. Keeping students at a distance will keep your child from becoming a close contact in case there is a positive student case. We know it can be hard, but our goal is to keep all children in school!

Chesterbrook Private Tutoring List

We often have requests for teachers that provide private tutoring. Linked, you will find a list of our Chesterbrook teacher tutors.

Schoology ~ How Do I Access?

Lockdown Notification - Drill Scheduled 9/17

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for all of us. We have a crisis management and emergency preparedness plan for our school that is reviewed and updated regularly. Our plan includes procedures on how to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Students and staff regularly practice these drills every school year. We also practice lockdown drills.

A new Virginia Law (22.1-137.2) requires schools to notify parents at least 24 hours before a school practices a lockdown drill. However, we are not required to share the exact date and time of the drill. We are required to practice lockdown drills two times a year. FCPS lockdown drills do not include any type of active shooter scenario training, they are instruction and classroom based.

We will conduct a lockdown drill at Chesterbrook on Friday, September 17th. Our pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students are exempt from mandatory participation in lockdown drills during the first 60 days of the school year. They will participate in our second and final drill later this school year.

Additional information on our lockdown drill program to include parent tips and FAQs can be found on the Emergency Planning and Crisis Response web page. After reviewing this content, you should discuss the value of these safety drills with your child.

Keeping our school safe and secure for all students and staff involves the participation of the entire school community, and we thank you for your help to keep our school safe.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Farris Thomas
Assistant Principal, Chesterbrook Elementary School

Health Updates Daily Symptom Check

Parents are asked to screen their children every morning before sending them to school.  If you have any questions about whether your child is able to come to school based on symptoms or exposure, please call the office. Please review this link as you make decisions for school attendance.   https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/forms/HealthScreeningQuestionnaire.pdf  Please do not send your child to school if they have been identified as a close contact to COVID case.  Please do notify administration if your child is pausing at home due to an exposure.

Important! A negative COVID test does not clear your child to return to school. A physician must complete return documentation when students receive the sick student notification form.

Sick Child at School ~ Guidance for Return to School

If your child is sent home from school with COVID like symptoms, parents must have a physician complete the Return to School form with appropriate documentation. Please do not return to school without the form completed by a care provider and appropriate documentation.

Administrative Verification Process for Return to School After Sick Student Notification from the School

The Sick Student Notification is received by a parent when your child shows any symptoms while present at school. This form is required for return to school with physician completion. It must be returned directly to an administrator before your child can return to school. Parents should not send children on the bus or drop at kiss n ride without having an administrator verify completion of health return documentation. An email with a photo of the documentation or checking in the office with your child on the morning of return will meet this expectation. Students without the correct clearance will not be allowed to return to class.

COVID Notifications Update for FCPS

If there is a new COVID case within the school, we will send out a community notification on Friday or the last day of school for the week.

AAP Elementary Continuum of Services

GovDelivery 1 week 1 day ago

Upcoming Date to Note

September 22 from 6:00 – 7:00 PM- Virtual AAP Continuum of Services Parent Information Meeting

Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) Elementary Continuum of Services

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of advanced learners.

FCPS offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in Grades K-12. The continuum of services approach allows for a focus on matching services rather than labeling students. Students have:

  • Multiple entry points for deeper learning opportunities in specific areas of need as they develop.
  • A cluster group of students with similar academic needs to continue growing in their learning.

Teachers, administrators, and Advanced Academic Resource Teachers (AARTs) work together to provide the following levels of service at the elementary level:

Tier 1 Access to AAP Curriculum and Strategies, Grades K-6 (Level I)

All students have opportunities to think critically, reason, and problem-solve.

  • All teachers use critical and creative thinking strategies in their lessons
  • Classroom teachers provide opportunities using materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework a minimum of once per quarter.

Because Level I services are for all FCPS students, there is not a screening process.

Differentiated Lessons in Areas of Academic Strength, Grades K-6 (Level II)

Some students are strong in one or more subject areas. Classroom teachers may adjust instruction for students in these areas by:

  • Providing different assignments and resources in those subjects
  • Grouping students by their strengths, interests, and readiness
  • Classroom teachers provide additional challenges using materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework.

Level II Services are re-evaluated each year.

Part-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-6 (Level III)

Some students have advanced academic abilities in multiple subject areas. They need part-time AAP services.

  • Students work with students that have similar academic needs through weekly pull-out classes or weekly co-taught lessons with the AART and classroom teacher.
  • Teachers provide frequent opportunities to use materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework in Language Arts, science, social studies, and/or mathematics.

Level III services continue through Grade 6. Students do not need to be evaluated each year.

Full-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-8 (Level IV)

Some advanced learners need a full-time advanced academic program with differentiated instruction in all four core content areas (Language Arts, mathematics, social studies, and science).

Students eligible for full-time AAP services are cluster grouped on a full-time basis and receive:

  • Full-time use of materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework in Language Arts, science, and social studies curriculum, and
  • Mathematics curriculum with depth and complexity that is at least one year above grade level.

Level IV services continue through Grade 8. Students do not need to be evaluated each year.

Screening for Levels II-IV

Multiple criteria are reviewed holistically to determine eligibility for all FCPS advanced academic services. Committees consider student work from opportunities with AAP lessons, examples of student reasoning or gifted behaviors from class discussions and activities, progress reports, achievement and ability scores, and parent input. Committees consider whether students have access to a group of students with similar academic needs to support academic conversations and growth in the classroom.

Eligibility decisions for Level II and Level III services are made by a committee at the local school

Screening for Level II and Level III services is ongoing throughout the school year. To refer for Level II or III services, submit the AAP School-Based Referral Form to the AART and the local school.

Eligibility decisions for full-time Level IV services are made by the countywide central selection committee.

Screening for Level IV services occurs during specific screening cycles:

  • Fall screening is available for students who are new to FCPS since January.
    • Fall referrals are due October 7.
  • Spring screening is available for any Grade 2-7 FCPS-enrolled student
    • The spring referral window is from the first day of school - December 15.

Referral forms for Levels II-IV are found at https://www.fcps.edu/node/38893

For more information, please visit the AAP website at: https://www.fcps.edu/registration/advanced-academics-identification-and-placement/current-fcps-students.

Ability Testing

FCPS uses ability testing as one part of the holistic screening process for Levels II-IV services. Test scores are not weighted or prioritized in the holistic screening process.

  • All students in Grade 1 take the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT).
  • All students in Grade 2 take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT).
  • NNAT and/or CogAT may be administered to students in Grades 3-6 who do not have an ability test score during the regularly scheduled testing windows.

Parents or guardians may request a one-time retest in grades 3-6 during the fall testing windows. Please contact the school testing coordinator, Farris Thomas, no later than September 15 to request the CogAT or October 15 for the NNAT.

Please do not wait for test scores before submitting a referral for your student in Grades 2-7 as there will be no referrals for Level IV screening accepted past the deadline.

Elementary Parent Information Meeting

A parent information virtual meeting will be held for Chesterbrook on September 22 from 6:00 – 7:00 PM. The AART will provide information about levels of service and examples at Chesterbrook, explain the screening processes, and answer questions about part-time school-based and full-time Level IV services.

Young Scholars

FCPS developed the Young Scholars Model to help identify students from historically underrepresented populations for AAP services. The model provides additional opportunity to nurture talent and build confidence so that students can meet their potential.

Twice-Exceptional (2e)

Some gifted students also have learning disabilities. These twice-exceptional, or “2e” students need strengths-based instruction. Their learning challenges also must be supported. FCPS has created a 2e handbook to help schools and families understand how to identify and serve 2e students. You can find these resources by going to www.fcps.edu and searching “2e.”

Middle and High School AAP

Additional information about middle and high school services may be found on the Advanced Academic Programs web page. https://www.fcps.edu/academics/academic-overview/advanced-academic-programs

Principal's Message

It has been wonderful to have our students back at school and building connections in person with all their classmates and teachers.

During the first two weeks teachers and staff worked to build connections, help students feel comfortable back at school, set expectations, build routine and begin instruction to build a positive foundation for the school year. We will continue to have foundational structures around social-emotional needs as we progress through the school year.

This year we have added a STEAM and Think Lab to Chesterbrook. As we build this new initiative, we look forward to ways in which we can embed this instruction for our primary students so they can apply concepts within core content in our upper grades. Ms. Vallath, AART, and Ms. Brown, SBTS, have spearheaded the efforts to get our lab up and running and we look forward to sharing how this is shaping and supporting our work around FCPS Portrait of a Graduate.

Our efforts around Covid mitigation will be constant, as we are continually working to provide the safest measures we can and being flexible when we need to adapt to updated guidance. This week we continued to work with lunches to adjust some timings to help maximize space and set up supervision for lunches outdoors. We are working to have only one grade level eating in the café at one time, which allows us to spread students out. Kinder and 1st are smaller grade levels eating at the same time and staying indoors so we can better manage their needs.

During lunches where we cannot create more indoor space, we are setting up an outdoor lunch option as often as possible. Next week 2nd and 5th grades will eat outdoors while 3rd and 6th grades are inside. The following week our grade levels will flip with 3rd and 6th being outdoors. These students are welcome to bring blankets to sit on the ground, but we have picnic tables that will nicely space 6 students at each table. The past generosity of our parents to our PTA made this purchase of picnic tables possible last school year. Please consider joining our PTA and donating to the Chipmunk fund to support important initiatives.

Our clinic has seen a number of students with various symptoms (mostly stomach aches and nausea), which will result in a sick student notification letter requiring follow up with your medical provider or covid testing before return to school. Thank you so much for your follow up, care and the precautions everyone is taking. We realize it is not easy to be called out of work. We all want nothing more than for our students to be in school and not having to quarantine our staff or students, so everyone's attention to care is greatly appreciated.

We welcome you to follow us on Twitter

Chesterbrook - @CES_FCPS
Mrs. Thomas - @Mrs_Fthomas
Mrs. Kirkpatrick - @PrincipalKirkp1

Have a wonderful long weekend and we look forward to seeing our Chipmunks on Tuesday. To those celebrating Rosh Hashana, may you have a wonderful Happy New Year celebration.

Sincerely,

Stacy

Arrival and Dismissal Reminders

Kiss N Ride

  • ONLY turn right into and out of the parking lot to keep traffic moving. Traffic waiting and trying to squeeze in causes a safety issue as people are blocking the sidewalk walkway, reducing visibility of walkers and bike riders.
  • We are noticing K&R cars dropping off and leaving students early. Do not drop off your children without staff supervision in place. We have buses completing double runs and you may notice a bus releasing students to admin, but this is planned so we can get our wonderful drivers out for their double back run. We are not sending students to class early.

Supervision of Students

  • Staff supervision for students begins at 8:30, students should not be left at the front door without parent supervision or arrive prior at the kiss n ride area without parent prior to this time.
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener for Grades 3-6

Students in Grades 3-6 will be given an SEL screener three times this year.

SEL skills include self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making. Research tells us that students with strong SEL skills are more successful in school, work, and relationships. The screener collects information about students’ SEL skills, feelings, relationships, school environment, and well-being. Screener results are used with other information to support students academically and personally. If you would like to opt out, please complete this form and return it to your child’s homeroom teacher by 9/20/21.

Student’s Rights & Responsibilities

Over the next few weeks, your child will be reviewing information contained in Student Rights and Responsibilities with teachers and administrators.

The Student Rights and Responsibilities document (SR&R) explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable and supportive school environment. All students will have the handbook on their laptop and parents can access the SR&R here

We ask that you either sign in parent vue (easiest and quickest way) that you have reviewed SR&R or you can complete this SR&R sheet and turn it into your child’s homeroom teacher before this Friday, 9/10.

CES 9.1.2021 Weather Update

GovDelivery 2 weeks 3 days ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Afternoon Approaching Weather

We are expecting heavy rains and increased winds this afternoon. As a precaution, we have moved afternoon music classes and teachers (general music, strings and band) to indoor classrooms for our 4th - 6th grades.

Afternoon dismissal changes are now monitored through the Pick Up Patrol (PUP) system that began this week. This system has already supported our teachers and students and we are thankful to have it in place. You have time this afternoon to set up your account and get any changes in (please see directions below). You have until 2:30 PM to enter any changes for today's dismissal!

If you need to change plans, please enter the change in the PUP system, which will notify teachers, administrators and our office team.

Safety is Priority

  • Students should not be walking alone or riding bikes in heavy storms. Please pick them up or have them ride the bus home.
  • Buses will be lined up at Exit 2 or Exit 1 and load directly from the closest door. We are announcing bus exits and staff will be directing students and supporting them.  We don't want them scared or worried.
  • Kiss N Ride and Walkers will go to the gym to be announced when their parent arrives.
  • If you normally meet your child at the flag pole and are still walking, during heavy rains please come under the awning and we will ensure your child connects with you. If it is pouring, we do not want to send student out without supervision. Please do make room for our bus riders to safely exit. If it is not raining, please remain at the flag pole.
  • Most Importantly!  We will have our office staffed until we know our students are home safe. Please call if you need us, we are here to support your children.

Bus Loop

Please keep the bus loop entrance clear and do not pull in this area during arrival or dismissal. We normally have a staff member that monitors this area. During a heavy storm, we need to keep our staff safe and will not staff this position.

Visibility may be low and staff, students and parents may be walking assisting children, so please drive slowly, do not pull around other cars and use caution.

Reminder of Pick Up Patrol System

Starting 8/30/21, we will be using a system called PickUp Patrol  to help us track dismissals changes. PickUp Patrol (PUP) will save us a great deal of time  in the office and will reduce interruptions in our classrooms—while also providing you with a convenient way to make changes to your children’s dismissal plans.

Most importantly, it will help us ensure that our students are safely dismissed to their correct after-school destinations.

Use the PUP web app for:

ATTENDANCE: When your child will be arriving late or leaving early.

DISMISSAL CHANGES: Submit changes to your child’s regular dismissal plans. For example:

  • A student normally rides the bus, but is getting picked up today.
  • A student usually goes to aftercare, but is leaving early for an appointment.

How it works:

Initially, you will register for an account. At this point set your "Default Plan" to be the permanent mode of transportation. Whenever you have a change to the Default Plan, you’ll submit a change through the PUP app. When the plan is submitted, the school will be notified and your child’s teacher will relay the change to them.

After this Friday, 9/3, we will no longer accept phone calls or emails for changes (except emergencies). Changes will be documented and shared through the PUP app.

Getting started with PUP-
Registration Emails were sent to parents on 8/29/21

  1. REGISTER: Chesterbrook will initiate a PUP registration email to all families following your receipt of this News You Choose message.  You will receive this registration email within a day from PickUp Patrol with a link to set up your account. The PUP web app is free to parents and you can use it from your smartphone or computer. PUP is not accessed through the app stores. Instead, for easy access, follow the instructions in your registration email for how to add it to your phone’s home screen.
  2. ENTER DEFAULT PLANS: Once you register, log into your PickUp Patrol account right away to confirm your child’s default dismissal plan. It’s important that you complete this step so that we can accurately dismiss your children.

Thank you for using PUP to make safety a priority and to ensure our dismissal process is efficient for all our students.

If you have any questions, please first check the PUP FAQ page. If you still need help, contact us here in the office at datroskey@fcps.edu or PickUp Patrol at support@pickuppatrol.net

Effective 8/30/21 Chesterbrook ES will begin our new process for sharing a change in your child's transportation plans. Good-bye Green Slips, Hello PUP!

Parents,

Chesterbrook is now using a new system to coordinate transportation plans such as late arrival, early dismissal pickups or changes in afternoon transportation.

As a reminder, we ask in our 2nd week, for students to not have play date pickups from school and limit changes as we settle into routines. If you need to share a change in dismissal plans, please read more about our new system.

CES Weekly Update 8.25.21

GovDelivery 3 weeks 3 days ago

Parent Handbook

Please check out the CES Parent Handbook to general questions you may have.

Transportation

In our first days we encountered some transportation issues as buses arrived late in the morning and many departed school very late in the afternoon. There is currently a driver shortage and Chesterbrook has a few buses that will run on a double back run. With that information, our buses should be arriving and departing in a much shorter window that will allow for children to access their entire school day and still get him in a timely manner.

Within the next two weeks, we expect that things will better fall into place with timing that will meet the needs of our community. In the meantime, if you would like to access kiss n ride or walk with your child, you may do so. Mrs. Kirkpatrick is quickly reviewing any request for our older students to walk or ride their bike independently. Parents may put in this request using the attached form.

Car Hang Tags for Kiss N Ride

We currently have 48% of students able to use digital applications on the computer. We need for parents to approve ASAP, so these will remain available to your children. Visit this page to read about approved programs we may use this year.

Afternoon Playdates and Changes in Pickup

During the first two weeks of school, we request that changes to home transportation and playdates not occur afterschool. We are getting a new system in place to organize and help staff and parents manage changes to transportation needs afterschool. Once set up, we will send information on the new system. If you have an urgent matter or emergency, please call or email the office and your child's teachers so we can help your child get home the appropriate way.

Mask Reminders and Updates

In order to mitigate the spread of any possible cases of Covid that may enter our building, universal mask compliance is used in the school building. Additionally, it is recommended students wear masks while playing closely outdoors.

Approved types of masks include:  Disposable masks, cloth mask coverings, double layer gaiters(new update), clear masks, cloth masks with clear plastic panel All face coverings/masks must meet the following requirements:  Face coverings/masks that fit properly (snugly around the nose and chin with no large gaps around the sides of the face) and face covering/mask with two (2) or more layers of non-woven material

Lunch Setting

We understand the concerns around eating while unmasked and wanted to share our school protocols:

  • students sit with their class and also within their grade level.
  • students all sit facing forward in one direction
  • students are only unmasked while eating and put it back on to talk after eating.
  • adults collect trash and provide assistance to students during lunch so movement around the cafeteria is very limited.

We are working to do our best to accommodate all students during lunches and keep them as safe as possible. There are a number of hurdles to sending students outdoors to eat including developing lunch safety expectations, staffing coverage, carrying hot lunches outdoors, cleanup and turnover of students in a timely manner.

Volunteer Lunch Hosts

If you are available to work within the school as a dining host on a regular basis for a solid amount of time, please contact Mrs. Kirkpatrick. If any volunteers are used, we can only work with people that can make strong commitments to becoming fingerprinted staff volunteers and can regularly be here to set expectations and develop routine.

Please know we are continuing to work to see what we can do with spacing and mitigation.

Arrival Drop Off Time Reminder

Please do not drop off your child at kiss n ride or the front door early. Students may be dropped off at 8:30, when staff will greet them. Supervision is not available for students prior as our staff are busy preparing for our school day.

Kiss and ride students and walkers from the gym side, should enter door #2. Walkers by the flag pole should enter door #1.

Patrol Application

5th and 6th grade students interested in serving as patrols are asked to complete this application. This form should be completed by our students with their parent's permission. Thank you!

Message from the Principal

Thank you your part in making our open house a huge success.  It looks like we have found another new way to make things even better. We received a lot of praise for the new format of open house this year with alpha splits. Teachers and parents shared that having a few families at a time gave them time to talk and explore the classroom and hopefully parking was much easier. Your flexibility in the time change was much appreciated. We adapted quickly to the flooding and ended up with a really nice afternoon for the event. The ice cream, sponsored by Mathnasium, was a huge hit on a hot afternoon.  Thank you to our PTA for their work to organize spirit wear sales, Sprout supply orders and delivery, Scoops 2 U ice cream cart, and our wonderful staff lunch from Cafe Rio this week. We are in the midst of setting up our PTA budget for the coming year and invite all parents to join us at the outdoor tent on September 9th at 9:15 for our first PTA meeting.  Please join our PTA and get involved.

We will have hurdles this year as we navigate the new variant of Covid. We promise to do all we can to provide a safe, nurturing and fun environment for your children. Your support over the past 18 months has been incredible. Please know your children are important to each and every staff member and we have work together as a team to do all we can to help them grow academically and socially. If you have a concern or want to share information to support your child, please reach out to your child's teacher.  We look forward to partnering with you.

Each day students should bring a water bottle to school and as we begin the school year it is essential to have a great night's rest. The first week back may be tiring for everyone, so eating good meals and getting a proper amount of sleep will help our students have a better day.

Sincerely,

Stacy Kirkpatrick, Principal

Breakfast and Lunch Update

Chesterbrook Menu Found HERE - 1st 2 weeks are posted now

All students will enjoy a free grab and go breakfast and hot lunch at Chesterbrook. Students wanting breakfast should head straight to the cafeteria.

Students will be able to eat breakfast in the cafeteria beginning at 8:30am. We will need students to go to their classroom at 8:45 to get ready for their day.All students are provided a free single breakfast or lunch. If they want a second lunch or a la carte items, they will need to purchase them. No a la carte items will be sold the first two weeks, so that we can set expectations and students may develop routines during the start of the year.

My School Bucks, Online Payment System, can be used to set up an option for your child to purchase additional items. Student pins will not be needed for free meals, therefore students will process through our line quickly this year.

Arrival & Dismissal Traffic Flow & Safety

We are a non walking school as Kirby is not deemed safe travel for students alone.  Parents are encouraged to walk or bike with their child and only use crosswalks. The crosswalk closest to the kiss n ride is most open for visibility.

Kiss N Ride

We are expecting a large load during Kiss n Ride and ask for your patience as we return to school.

  • Display your last name on a large piece of paper with the names of children under - we will get hang tags soon!
  • Please pull all the way forward to unload/load child and allow for as many cars as possible to fill the K&R circle. Staff will direct you.
  • Students should exit the right side of the car independently - staff can assist but parents should remain in car.
  • Students should also be able to enter the car and buckle in and be seated unassisted. Practice this at home with younger students and park in the lot if you need to assist your child.
Traffic Flow

ONLY turn right into the parking lot, we ask that you go down and turn around into the line and not block the road trying to turn left into the CES kiss n ride line. This will prevent accidents and keep our traffic flow moving.

Cars will be expected to turn right out of the parking lot to expedite the flow of traffic.  Please be cautious of walkers and bike riders and give right of way to them.

Students are not allowed to unload or load on Kirby road. We understand that pulling in the lot takes more time, but it also keeps our students the safest.

These practices will enable our Kiss and Ride to move quickly smoothly for all.

Walking families

Drop off and meet up at Flag Pole or by trailers and sidewalk on Kirby. Please make sure your child knows if they are to meet you at the flag pole, otherwise, all children meet by the gym entrance.

Walker Biking Parent Permission

Complete permission form and email to SKirkpatrick@fcps.edu.

This is targeted to our older students (4th-6th) travelling without parent supervision.
Contact Mrs. Kirkpatrick for questions.

Mrs. Kirkpatrick will review all requests ASAP and reply to parents. Please be mindful that Kirby is not deemed a safe travel path for students.

All students should exit the building from the front of the school for supervision and safety.

Safety Patrols

Calling our 5th or 6th grade students interested in being a patrol this school year!!!  We look forward to bringing back this opportunity.

Students should complete an interest form with permission from their parent. Look for this to be sent out later this week.

We are revising our patrol program and look forward to utilizing all interested students who want to help lead our school.  Students will be rotating responsibilities as we all work to build a positive and safe environment. Students will not be in charge of student  behavior or reporting misbehavior of other students. They will be asked to promote safety through helping others and encouraging kindness.

Everyone can lead given the right tools and guidance!

Stay tuned for more information on our new Student Ambassadors program which will replace SCA. We will not have designated elected officers, rather encourage student leadership from a wide variety of students that are not chosen by a peer election.  Mrs. Kirkpatrick will share more very soon!!!

Digital Consent Form

At Chesterbrook, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used. You can find our school’s list of the resources that require parental consent here: Link to Chesterbrook Digital Resources. Additionally, you can find more information about approved digital resources in FCPS here: https://www.fcps.edu/resources/technology/digital-resources.

Included on this page is also a link to a form where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools. We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission. Please reach out to our School Based Technology Specialist, Megan Brown, at mebrown@fcps.edu if you have questions or concerns about the digital resources we’ve chosen to use this year.

Summer is Here

As we begin to emerge back into a summer where the activities for our children are returning, we want them to play, swim and be with friends. Time to visit family, socialize with friends and free play should be a priority for our kids.

We have received requests for supporting student summer learning. We can help our students retain skills they gained this year by encouraging them to read for pleasure and review basic skills in language arts and math. The activities below will help support parents in providing structures that can be used in small chunks for summer learning.

Chesterbrook READS Summer Program

This summer Chesterbrook is offering for students to participate in our Summer Reading Program. Students are required to read six books and complete a review for three of those books. Message from the Principal

After a year that we have rewritten so many times, it feels odd that it is actually coming to an end. In many ways, I'm glad to have closure on this most unusual school year and yet it feels that it has been so short.

Looking ahead at the next two weeks we look forward to celebrating all the accomplishments of our students. They have persevered through a time we will not forget and I am confident they have learned along the way. It was different than what one envisions for their new kindergarten student and the many playdates and new in school experiences, how students thought their year would go with traditions of Greco Day, the fifth grade Dig, sixth grade Science Fair, Book Fairs, or enjoying weekly pencil sales in the hall.  While many things changed, our students still grew in different ways and I'm thankful for the appreciation for school, hard work and perseverance I have witnessed and tremendous support from our community. We got through this school year together and these final weeks should be about celebrating what we were able to accomplish in this very different school year. As I have shared with our staff, the 2020-21 theme this year was "Together We Can" as a school community, "Together We Did."

We continue to face challenges as we work to close out and reunite all of our students virtually and in-person. This is not easy and we are doing the best we can to recognize our 100% virtual students and celebrate along with them while we are closing out our in-person students. There are opportunities during these final weeks for our 100% virtual students to join their classes, if this is an option. I understand that not all our students can do this and we will do all we can to make our closing events as inclusive as possible.

With Appreciation,

Stacy Kirkpatrick
