CES Weekly Update 1.17.22

GovDelivery5 days 21 hours ago

Principal's Message

Dear Parents,

We look forward to our week ahead. As a reminder, it will be a short week to finish out the second quarter.

As anticipated, along with the Fairfax County positivity rates, we have seen a rise in Covid cases after the break. Thank you for being diligent about checking on the health and well being of your child before sending them to school each day. Children are showing slight symptoms such as headache, stomach-ache, low grade fevers, funny noses and slight cough. If in doubt, please keep them home and let us know. The absence will be excused and teachers will support children with instruction while symptoms are evaluated.

We held a PTA meeting last week and updates are posted below. Your collaboration and open communication is greatly appreciated. During the meeting it was mentioned whether parents or the PTA can support the purchase of better masks for students. If you are having any difficulty securing high quality masks for your children and need help, please let us know ( you can use the parent survey linked below) so we can support your family. FCPS will continue to utilize masks as a prevention strategy.

Our office team has worked hard to support families while managing Covid cases and necessary quarantines. Please reach out to our office if you need assistance.

Sincerely,

Stacy Kirkpatrick

We would like teachers to be able to provide class contact directory in a secure way on their schoology class page but want to provide an opportunity to let your parents know if parents DO NOT want their information shared. Teachers would post parent name, child name, parent phone and parent email for the children in their grade level. CES Health Notification 1.14.22

GovDelivery1 week 2 days ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

1/14/2022

Dear School Community:

In cooperation with the Fairfax County Health Department, this letter is to inform you that six students at Chesterbrook Elementary have reported testing positive for COVID-19 during the week of January 10th through January 14th.

If you have not been contacted by FCPS, your child is not considered a potential close contact to a positive case at this time. If any additional persons are identified as close contacts during the contact tracing and case investigation process, the Fairfax County Health Department will contact those individuals directly.

A close contact is any person, regardless of vaccination status, who is within six feet of a COVID-19 positive individual for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) K-12 Indoor Exception states students will not be identified as close contacts if they are at least 3 feet apart and consistently wearing masks in the classroom. (Adults are not included in this exception).

If you have questions about COVID-19, you may contact the Fairfax County Health Department at 703-267-3511 (9 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays). You may also email [email protected]  (monitored 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays). Additional COVID-19 resources can be found on the Virginia Department of Health or FCPS websites.

FCPS also maintains a COVID-19 Dashboard that shows daily cases of COVID-19 at the division and school level. Please know that this information is being shared to keep you informed and aware.

We all play a part in stopping the spread of COVID-19.

For more information on COVID-19 Supports and Resources, please visit the Virginia Department of Health website.

Thank you for your cooperation and patience, as we work through the COVID-19 pandemic together.

Sincerely,

Stacy Kirkpatrick, Principal

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Chesterbrook Families,

Happy Friday! As we prepare to observe the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday on Monday, January 17, we are also watching for the potential of winter weather early in the week. FCPS shared that our next snow day and those thereafter will be virtual days running on an approximate two-hour delay schedule.

Devices:

To support virtual learning, students should use their FCPS laptops. These devices have many of the programs and applications bookmarked and downloaded, so they should provide access.

K-2 Students

  • Will take home laptops & chargers in advance of inclement weather
  • Should return laptops & chargers upon their first day returning in person
  • If devices are not functioning properly or damaged, they can be replaced as needed
  • If devices are lost, there is a fee associated with replacement for both the charger and laptop
  • Our goal is that by returning chargers for our younger students, when not needed at home, we will minimize loss

3-6 Students

  • Will take home laptops nightly to charge at home and bring back the next day
  • Chargers and cases were given to students at the beginning of the year to support this effort
  • Chargers can stay at home until the end of the year
  • If devices are not functioning properly or damaged, they can be replaced as needed
  • If devices are lost, there is a fee associated with replacement for both chargers and laptops

Supporting Zoom Group Session our At Home Chesterbrook Students

We realize it is difficult if your children are learning from home during their quarantine period so we have set up a way for an optional check in with a staff member for any students that are learning from home due to Covid exposure or positivity.

Teachers are in contact, supplying asynchronous assignments and lessons via asynchronous or live zoom connections.

The check-ins will be mixed groupings of primary or upper grades to support social-emotional needs.

We are starting this Thursday (tomorrow) with our 3rd - 6th grade students tomorrow at 1PM and next Tuesday at 9AM with our Kindergarten through 2nd grade students. Beginning January 13th
1PM - 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grade students - Tuesday and Thursday

Message from the Principal

We look forward to welcoming everyone back tomorrow. Please know we will be diligent with continued safety measures as our staff and students return.

As we return from break, please make sure you health screen your child before sending them to school on Monday, January 10. If your child does not feel well or presents with any COVID-like symptoms, please keep them at home and seek medical advice. Many symptoms with the new variant mimic allergy symptoms. If your child has new symptoms, please ere on the side of caution. We appreciate your support in keeping our Chesterbrook community healthy!  For parent convenience, click here for the Daily Health Questionnaire.

Communication and teamwork are critical components supporting the education of our students through this pandemic. Your partnership and support is invaluable.

With appreciation of your support,

Stacy Kirkpatrick

Parent Check In/Survey

We have responded to families that have completed the survey. If you have needs, we ask that you continue to report cases and needs on the survey. This survey will allow us to ensure we have responded and track all cases and needs in a timely manner.

In an effort to support any questions you may have and support our community, you are invited to share any concerns or questions with our administrative team so we can be proactive in our return.

New Guidance for Returning to School After Quarantine, Pause, or Isolation The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued new guidance for isolation and quarantine in late December, with multiple updates in January. This guidance reduces isolation and quarantine to five days. The VDH states that school districts may choose to continue more stringent isolation and quarantine requirements or may implement the new CDC guidance.

FCPS will adopt the new guidance with one exception:

  • FCPS will adopt CDC’s recommendation for a five-day period of quarantine for  students and staff.
  • FCPS will adopt CDC’s recommendation for a five-day period of isolation for staff.
  • FCPS will NOT adopt CDC’s recommendation for isolation for students as we are unable to implement the required physical distancing protocols during meals.  FCPS students with COVID- 19 will need to continue to complete a ten day isolation period.

Return Guidance for Students who are Close Contacts to Community Related Exposures

NEW!   FCPS will no longer require Return to School documentation for a student deemed a close contact outside of the school environment, in the community. FCPS recommends that families adhere to the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) quarantine guidance, as appropriate. If families have questions regarding COVID-19, they are encouraged to consult their physician or the Fairfax County Health Department

FCPS Covid Testing Sites

Starting back up this week, students may obtain COVID-19 diagnostic testing at six drive-through sites in Fairfax County. Diagnostic testing is provided for anyone who has symptoms or is identified as a close contact of someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19.

Appointments are not required for diagnostic testing but families must register in the secure online portal. When you register and provide consent for your child to be tested, they will also be added to Chesterbrook’s screening testing pool. If you do not wish for them to be part of the weekly screening testing pool, simply log back into the online portal after your child’s test is complete and withdraw consent.  More information about diagnostic and screening testing, including site locations and schedules, is available on our website

Kent Gardens French Immersion Information Night

Come learn about the French Immersion program virtually on January 18th at 5:30 p.m.  The link will be available in the Immersion Registration Site on the day of the meeting for security purposes. In the interim, if you have questions regarding the immersion program, please do include them in this google form.  Beatrix Preusse from the World Languages office will lead the meeting virtually.

Vaccine Availability for Children Ages 5-11

The Fairfax Health District and Fairfax County Public Schools are hosting free COVID-19 vaccine clinics at 10 schools for students 5-11 years of age. Children do not need to be an FCPS student to attend these clinics. Vaccines will not be available for those 12 years and older. Children must be accompanied by a parent or another responsible adult at all community vaccination sites.

The Fairfax County Health Department’s webpage has information about the clinics and resources for finding and scheduling a vaccine appointment. Up-to-date information about vaccination opportunities is available on our website

If your child is fully vaccinated, you may share that information with Mr. Troskey and he will update the health record.

Requesting Clearance for Return of Student after Exposure to Covid Positive Case

If your child has been exposed to a person that has been diagnosed with Covid, they will need to be cleared by the FCHD before returning to school. Please do not send them to school without this clearance. In order to assist parents, we wanted to share the process for requesting vaccinated students to return to school after exposure. Currently the clearance today has been happening quickly.

If your child is fully vaccinated, please complete the COVID Contact Vaccination Verification survey. Sharing your child’s vaccination status will help the health department expedite your child’s return if your child meets the criteria

The admin team still appreciated parents completing the form to report exposure to the school so we can track clearance for your child.

REPEATED INFORMATION BELOW

Principal's Message

I hope that you and your family had a wonderful holiday and time together. This time has been a time of family and togetherness that we all needed. I'd be remiss if I didn't also share that I realize so many of our families were touched by Covid over the holiday break. Chances are you knew someone who was sick or cared for a loved one in your own home. This forced families to delay family get togethers and make last minutes changes to plans. As the surge of Covid impacts our community, we must take care in returning to school.

We look forward to having staff and students return to school on Monday. I look forward to the buses rolling in and all the fun that kiss n ride brings each day. I expect our kiss n ride to be fairly busy once again and with the sidewalk construction ramping back up, it will be a time to bring our patience and making sure we don't arrive in pick up line until 3:30pm.

Safety Precautions with Reminders

We have many precautions in place across the school and will continue to be diligent with safety measures including:

  • Outdoor lunch - As weather allows (above 45 degrees with no rain or wind - a bit of sun helps too) we will continue outdoor lunch with the support of our amazing team of lunch volunteers. I can't thank this team enough for their consistent support!
  • Universal Masking - All staff and students will properly wear face masks unless eating or drinking or outdoors with appropriate spacing. We do encourage student outdoors to wear masks when playing closely with friends.
  • Social Distancing - Students are distanced as much as possible. Snack time is alternated for students and students should bring individual water bottles to and from school each day. PLEASE label water bottles.
  • Visitor Protocols- Visitors are limited in the building. We are tightening our visitor protocol to limit visitors and exposure possibilities while transmissions rates are high in our community. As previously shared, parents may contact the office to communicate needs and our wonderful office staff will support. We encourage you to call before you come to the building to see if we can assist you virtually or over the phone.
    • Late Arrivals - late students may enter door one and our office staff will check them in. A parent does not need to walk children in but may walk to the door and our staff will greet your child and ensure they get them to class.
    • Early Dismissals - Dismissals need to occur before 3PM unless in case of emergency. We encourage you to use the PUP to enter the early dismissal and we will have your child ready for you. You are welcome to call our office if you need to pick up your child our office staff will have them ready at door one when you arrive.

Chesterbrook's Plan for Support of Staff and Students

As we return it is inevitable that staff will need to be quarantined if they are ill. When possible, if classroom teachers are well enough but cannot be in the building, they will be allowed to support instruction (creating lesson plans and responding to student work) with a sub in the classroom to drive the daily plan. At this time, teachers who are working from home will not be teaching live virtual lessons. As we need to think outside the box, if we have teachers working from home they may be used to check in and work with quarantined students that they do not directly teach. This really depends on a variety of factors, so we ask for your patience as we work on supports of staff and students. One thing to know is our Chesterbrook staff believes that ALL Chesterbrook students are OUR students and we will do all we can to support our community.

It is also expected that students will be out at times if they are sick or paused from instruction. While we hope to limit this, it is part of the course we have to travel in the coming weeks. Administrators will work with teachers to develop a support plan as quickly as possible. Please know that it takes time to create a support plan and it will look different than a synchronous day of instruction. FCPS has shared the expectation is that by day 3, a full plan will be in place for a quarantined student. At Chesterbrook our teachers have readily been able to get a plan into place very quickly. If more students and staff are impacted, the timeline may lengthen. We ask for your patience and greatly appreciate your support.

Parent Check In/Survey

In an effort to support any questions you may have and be ready for our opening on Monday, you are invited to share any concerns or questions with our administrative team so we can be proactive in our return.
Complete Parent Check/In Survey form here.

With Appreciation and Gratitude,

Stacy Kirkpatrick, Principal

COVID Diagnostic Testing this Weekend

FCPS is offering additional diagnostic testing Saturday, January 1 and Sunday, January 2 for symptomatic staff and students. Please note that the location has changed to South County High School. Testing will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This testing should only be utilized by students and staff who are symptomatic, and want to know their health status before returning to school or work. Please note that this testing is not mandatory to return to work or school.

Scheduled appointments will not be available; however, you must register for an account in advance. The building will not be open for use so please plan accordingly. Updates regarding capacity limits will be posted to the FCPS Twitter account and as an alert on the homepage of the FCPS website. Students should be prepared with their ID number.

FCPS Shares the Following Updates with Covid Protocols

The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) will contact close contacts through email ONLY. This change in process has been implemented due to the high volume of cases to ensure contacts are provided guidance in a timely manner. Via email, close contacts will be provided information regarding quarantine, testing, and the vaccination survey.

The week of January 3 will be used to collaborate with the FCHD and revise our COVID response process in light of CDC’s revised guidance on isolation and quarantine. During this time (January 3-7), the existing timeline for isolation for COVID positive individuals (10 days) and quarantine options for close contacts (14, 10, 7 days with a negative test) will continue to be used. Updates will be provided to principals as soon as possible. If there are extenuating circumstances or specific concerns raised by a family, those concerns should be addressed on a case-by-case basis.

CES Admin ask that parents complete the Check In form if you have a positive case, close contact exposure of have questions so we can support any needs in our community.

CES Weekly Update 1.1.2022

Happy Kwanza to all who Celebrate Happy New Year!!!
We Grow Together In 2022 we will continue to pull together as a staff and community to support our students and each other.

December 17th - Pajama Day

December 20th - 31st - Winter Break

2021 FCPS Student Calendar Quick Glance

There will be no homework over break and no major assignments two days after we return. We want all our FCPS families, staff and students to enjoy this winter break.

Principal's Message

I hope everyone has planned a bit of fun with family over the winter holiday break. I am looking forward to the next two weeks, as are many of our staff, to disconnect and give ourselves some time to relax and renew. Our front office will be closed from December 20th - December 31st. I am also planning to step away the majority of this break. We look forward to having our students return on January 3rd.

The past couple of weeks we kicked off a new Student Ambassadors Program at Chesterbrook.  This program will replace the old style of SCA where very few students could become leaders in our school.  As a principal, I envision a school full of opportunities with endless bounds where our students have voice and choice in what will help us become the most welcoming environment to learn and grow.  We presently have over 80 fifth and sixth grade students that have taken the initiative to become Chesterbrook Ambassadors.  We had our first leadership training this last week where we discussed four goals of student leader development: Developing Strengths, Achieving Goals, Actively Contributing and Continuously Improving. Students shared projects that they feel would benefit Chesterbrook or the greater community and shared their strengths with each other. I am thrilled about what I already see from these young leaders and am so hopeful about the positive impact they will make across our community.

Last week, we held our December PTA Meeting and here are a few updates:

1- Quarantine - Reduced to 7 days for close contacts (if negative testing after day 5 and no symptoms or FCHD may approve immediate return of fully vaccinated students)

2- School Improvement Plan and Federal Funding Plan to support plans - Money has been obtained from the grant to support school improvement. Chesterbrook goals were shared at the meeting.

3- Student Ambassador Update - included in letter above

Thank you for your tremendous support so far this school year. I wish you all a wonderful and joyful winter break and Merry Christmas to all who celebrate.

Sincerely,

Stacy Kirkpatrick

We Appreciate our CES Families

Thank you to our Chesterbrook PTA and families that donated to our Staff Breakfast.

We enjoyed a wonderful spread as we closed out this last week and came together as a staff.
Your support is greatly appreciated!

Rising 7th Grade Curriculum Night at Longfellow

Longfellow Middle School is excited to invite you to the Rising 7th Grade Curriculum Night on Tuesday, January 11 from 6:00pm - 8:00pm. This night will be full of information about Longfellow and the transition to middle school. Our core and elective teachers will highlight their exciting classes. There will be students and staff members to answer any questions you might have. If you have any questions that you hope to get answered at the event, please take time to complete this form. The inclement weather date is Wednesday, January 12 from 6:00pm - 8:00pm.

Covid Vaccinations

It is important to file your child's Covid vaccination record with the school.  Once students are two weeks out of their 2nd shot, the return to school process is quicker in getting them returned to the classroom should they be paused as a close contact of a positive Covid case.

Once your child has received both doses of the vaccine, please send record of vaccination to Dave Troskey ([email protected]).  He will update the information in SIS and file it in the student's health file. This will help us support students as we complete contact tracing and work with the health department.

Drive Through Testing Sites

Starting this week, students may obtain COVID-19 diagnostic testing at six drive-through sites in Fairfax County. Diagnostic testing is provided for anyone who has symptoms or is identified as a close contact of someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19.

COVID-19 testing helps us reduce the virus’ spread and keep our schools safe places for all students to learn.

Appointments are not required for diagnostic testing but families must register in the secure online portal.

Please note:  When you register and provide consent for your child to be tested, they will also be added to Chesterbrook's screening testing pool. If you do not wish for them to be part of the weekly screening testing pool, simply log back into the online portal after your child’s test is complete and withdraw consent.

More information about diagnostic and screening testing, including site locations and schedules, is available on this website

Parents/Guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for full-time advanced academic programs (Level IV AAP services) may submit the AAP Level IV Referral Form to Chesterbrook’s AART, Amy Vallath [email protected], no later than December 15.

The window to submit an AAP Level IV Referral Form is the first day of school through December 15, annually.  Forms for full-time and part-time referrals are available on the AAP Forms Page. No late referrals for Level IV services can be accepted.

Submitting a referral form for AAP Level IV will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of professionals from various schools review materials to determine eligibility for level IV placement.  Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of the portfolio that was submitted after they have been turned in for central selection by emailing Amy Vallath [email protected]. Referrals for AAP Levels II-III (part-time services) are screened at the local school.

For more information, there are parent presentations available on the FCPS AAP website (under “Presentations”) that contain information similar to our fall parent information meetings at Chesterbrook.

2021 FCPS Student Calendar Quick Glance

Principal's Message

As we close out this week of Thanksgiving, I wanted to share my thanks for your support this school year. While we have still needed to adapt to keep safety a priority, the most important part is our children are back in school with their teachers and with their peers as they continue to learn and grow alongside. You have asked to fulfill needs within our school, sent in donations of wipes to keep the germs at bay, supported our staff with your notes of thanks and appreciation and ensured your children came to school with what they need to help them be successful. I do hope that each of our Chesterbrook families, staff and students, were able to fully embrace this break and enjoy time with family and friends.

I want to share my deepest thanks for our lunch time parents volunteers that have devoted their time to supporting our students and keeping them eating outdoors as long as possible. As the temperature dip we are continuing to monitor possibilities to eat outdoors and will whenever we can. When the temps hit mid 40s or we have a lot of wind and of course rain, we are eating indoors. While working to keep everyone as safe as possible, our students still need to be as comfortable as possible. Please do continue to send coats with your children.

I wanted to wish a Happy Hanukkah to those beginning their celebration this evening.

With Gratitude,

Stacy Kirkpatrick

Reminder:  Window for AAP Level IV (full-time) Referrals to Close December 15, 2021

Order your Yearbook NOW!

Don't miss out on ordering your Chesterbrook Yearbook.  The deadline is April 18th.

If you have any photos to be considered for the yearbook, please upload them to Dropbox.

Laptop Care- It's RESTART Time!

FCPS has been pushing many new updates and security patches to school laptops to ensure new policies, filtering and the most recent version of applications are in place. It’s important that students restart their laptops.

A shutdown and then powering on is not the same as a restart.

A RESTART is done by selecting the (1) Windows logo, clicking the (2) power icon, and selecting (3) Restart from the window options.

Honoring our Vetrans

Thank you to our Veterans and those that currently serve in our armed forces. We appreciate the sacrifice you and your family make to serve our country.

Principal's Message

During the first quarter, teachers have taken a deep dive into understanding the needs of our students, assessing where they are performing and watching our student return this week and dive into workshops, learning, interventions and play has been wonderful. I hope each family has had the opportunity to connect with your child's teacher on their start to the school year.

So many kids have been sharing their excitement with me as they have received their first Covid vaccination. It is wonderful that even some of our littlest Chipmunks are reporting when they will be fully vaccinated. As always, our office staff will be happy to work with you to accommodate medical appointments during the school day as needed.

During this month of Thanksgiving, I send a request to spread joy and thanks by having your child write a card to their teacher letting them know how they are making a difference and why they are thankful to be back in school this year. As we look over the past year and the obstacles we have had to endure as a community, it is surreal. Sharing our thanks and letting others know how they are making a difference and what we appreciate is a gift. Thank you for taking advantage of this chance to uplift our wonderful staff as we approach the holiday season.

We had a PTA meeting on Thursday where I was able to share a few updates:

Outdoor lunches:
We have continued outdoor lunches and as we go into winter, we will do so every day we possibly can. The PTA will look at getting some cushions for students to sit on so the benches will be a bit warmer. Please send kids with outdoor wear for recess and lunch.

Field Trips
We have had a few field trips take place, virtual and in person. First grade attended Hidden Oaks, 4th Grade visited Jamestown/Williamsburg and 6th grade took in a virtual Art Museum experience. We also have seen some annual traditions of grade levels return including the 5th grade "Dig" and 1st grades International Celebration. As the year progresses we look forward to bringing in opportunities for our students. Grade levels will not have the opportunity to plan missed field trips from the time during virtual instruction.

Other updates provided with expanded information below:

Quarantine Updates as of 11/15

Have a wonderful weekend!

Online Ordering for School Photos

This school year we partnered with a new studio for your child's photos.  Victor O'Neill Studios captured beautiful photos of our Chesterbrook Chipmunks. We are also happy to share that we will be working with Herff Jones to produce our yearbook.  More news on yearbook ordering will be coming as we set up Chesterbrook's online ordering page.

Your School Photos are Ready for Ordering! Please visit: https://vando.imagequix.com/g1000875819 and use your student ID when prompted for the online code. For questions regarding school pictures please email: [email protected]

Elementary Progress Reports

1st Quarter Report cards are available in Parent Vue. These should be access electronically during the school year and final report cards will be printed for parents at the end of the school year. If you have difficulty accessing your child's report card, please reach out to Mr. Troskey in our front office.

Your child’s Quarter 1 progress report demonstrates achievement, effort, and  citizenship skills after the first 9 weeks of a return to in-person learning. The purpose of any  system of reporting to families is to strengthen the home-school partnership and to inform  families about student progress. This 1st quarter was unique and presented new opportunities  for teachers to prioritize social-emotional health and wellness, as well as identify academic  needs through a variety of assessments. Getting to know each child is the best way to match  instructional programming to student needs. School staff continues to assess and monitor  students’ strengths and areas for growth using a variety of assessments. Your child will continue  to have opportunities to demonstrate mastery towards grade level standards throughout the  school year and your child’s teacher will continue to communicate your child’s progress.

For more information about elementary grading and reporting, please visit the FCPS website  (https://www.fcps.edu/academics/grading-and-reporting/elementary-school) or refer to the  information included on the progress report envelope.

Covid Vaccinations

Pop-up Vaccine Clinics for Students Aged 5-11

This Tuesday, November 16, school-located pop up pediatric COVID-19 vaccine clinics will begin in our highest impacted communities. More information can be found on the Fairfax County Health Department website.

Once your child has received both doses of the vaccine, please send record of vaccination to Dave Troskey ([email protected]).  He will update the information in SIS and file it in the student's health file.

NEW! Optional Weekly Covid Screening

Optional COVID-19 screening testing will begin the week of November 15 for students who are not fully vaccinated. FCPS is partnering with LongView International Technology Solutions, Inc. (LTS) to provide testing services for

Screening will be optional and parents must opt students into testing. Schools will test 10% of the total student population out of the students that are opted in for testing, therefore 57 students at Chesterbrook would be screened weekly based on our population. If less than 57 students are opted in, those students will be screened weekly.

Parents would be sent an email letting them know if their child is randomly selected for testing during that particular week. We will generate our screening list on Tuesday of each week. Chesterbrook students that are tested would be tested on Thursday afternoon from 1 - 3PM weekly. An outside company will be coming to Chesterbrook to test children with support of CES office staff getting them to and from the testing room.

One-time parent/legal guardian consent is required to begin COVID screening testing for a student to be tested at school. You may withdraw your consent for testing at any time. If you want your child to begin participating in COVID-19 screening testing, you must pre-register your child(ren) and provide consent using the LTS secure online portal. If you do not want your child to participate in COVID-19 screening testing, no action is required. You will have the option each week to update your child’s vaccination and consent for testing.

Quarantine Period Reduced to 10 Days for School Exposures

The transmission rate in Fairfax County recently decreased from “substantial” to “moderate.” More than 71% of our community ages 12 and older have received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Since schools opened in August, we have seen a very low rate of in-school transmission of COVID-19 at just 0.02% across FCPS.

Starting Monday, November 15, FCPS will reduce the duration of quarantine for students who are exposed to COVID-19 in a school setting.

Parents/Guardians must keep their child at home until one of the following quarantine periods is met:

  • 10 days of quarantine, the child remains symptom free AND parents provide a copy of the FCPS pause letter indicating the return to school date; or
  • 14 days of quarantine and parents provide a copy of the clearance email from the health department.

Clothing Drive- Nov. 4- Nov. 17

Student Ambassadors are leading a schoolwide clothing drive. We are collecting new undergarments and socks as well as new or gently used coats, hats and gloves for Parklawn Elementary. Outdoor Lunches on Colder Days

As the weather is moving to the colder side, we are planning to continue outdoor lunches as much as possible. At our PTA meeting last week we discussed how to keep our students more comfortable. Our latest issue is the bees being attracted to the yummy lunches are students are enjoying.

Please ensure your child has a warm coat and hat for outdoor play and lunch. We will not eat outdoors if there are high winds, severe threatening weather or extreme cold. We will be establishing parameters as we move forward of what that threshold is, but aim to be outdoors as much as possible.

The PTA is looking into cushions for students to sit on at our tables or other ways that may help keep them warm on the colder days. If you have feedback or ideas, they are appreciated.  Feel free to email Mrs. Kirkpatrick at [email protected]

Federal Impact Aid Survey

Your child has brought home a Federal Impact Aid Form in Thursday folders last week. FCPS (Chesterbrook ES) is asking all families to complete the Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid for each child. Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For each school-aged child in your household who attend Chesterbrook ES, you must complete the form.

As parents, your homework (to support your child) is as follows:

  • Please complete, sign, date, and place in your child’s backpack to give to the homeroom teacher. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in section 3.
  • Have your child turn into the teacher this week. Our goal is full class participation.
  •  All results are CONFIDENTIAL. (Note the final deadline is the 29th of October).
Reminders

All students should bring a water bottle to school daily labeled with their name on it.

Bring a nut free snack daily

Label names in your jackets and sweatshirts - these items are taken off quickly when students are warm and then left behind.

The Bookfair is Coming!!!!

Our in-person book fair is a welcome sight and it will be here before we know it! Book fair will run from November 4th - November 11th. We are trying to keep with our fun traditions of an evening event and Saturday morning breakfast and books. Things will be adapted a bit this year to keep us safe while browsing and enjoying this wonderful school event, which also serves as a fundraiser for our library.

Get ready to support our school library and enjoy many great books. Thank you to our PTA and Mrs. Reid for their work to make this event happen. Look for more information to come home next week.

Support Chesterbrook- Shop through Amazon Smile this Holiday Season

We know some of you have already started holiday shopping, take 2 minutes to make you are supporting Chesterbrook with every purchase! Here's how to link it to the Amazon shopping app on your mobile phones!

Simply follow these instructions to turn on AmazonSmile and start generating donations for our school.

(1) If you have not already done so, register to support Chesterbrook Elementary  PTA through AmazonSmile in a web browser - https://smile.amazon.com
(2) Open the Amazon Shopping app on your device.
(3) Go into the main menu of the app and tap into 'Settings'
(4) Tap 'AmazonSmile' and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process
(5) Select 'Chesterbrook Elem PTA' as your charity.
(6) Begin shopping.

Funds from purchases in the app will go to the PTA unless you turn off AmazonSmile donations or change your charity. This is a great, simple way to automatically give 0.5% on each of your eligible purchases.  If everyone participates (don't forget to tell your family & friends) it can really add up!

CES Kiss N Ride 10.18.21

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Kiss N Ride Updates

First of all, a huge thank you for your collaboration and efforts to help us with getting kids to and from school safely. We all know safety is our collective priority.

Our student patrols have been instrumental in helping us expedite drop off in the morning. Adding students around the loop has allowed us to have more help unloading students quickly and safely.

The request not to turn left into the lot from the opposite side of Kirby is simply a principal's request to keep traffic flowing down Kirby and not block the roadway as cars are hanging out into oncoming traffic. Mrs. Kirkpatrick has consistently been working with our Safety and Security specialist to provide the best guidance for our families with respect to efficiency and safety of our staff and students. While principals do not control traffic laws, we do make requests to help our community function better. If there are no cars that would block your ability to pull in, by all means make the left safely and enter the kiss and ride line. It's really all about making our kiss n ride work as best it possibly can and working together we can all make that happen.

Pickup of Students in the Afternoon

Cars are lining up WAY TOO EARLY!  There is no reason to line up 45 minutes to an hour early to pick up your child from school.  We are also then blocking Kirby Road and this creates a barrier to safe traffic flow for our community, which extends beyond Chesterbrook Elementary parents.

We ask cars to arrive no earlier than 3:30 for our 3:35 dismissal.  We have been able to load cars in no less than 15 minutes, which is a great record.

Using your last name car tag, helps us expedite pickup as we call names and get your kids cued in line and ready.

Please help our neighbors by not blocking Kirby to wait in line for dismissal.

Kiss N Ride Line Up Should Begin at 3:30PM.  Thank you for working with this guidance.

As we get into cooler months, it becomes more important to label sweatshirts and coats with your child's name. Students will need to keep on top of their items. We want to get lost items back to our students and don't have a lot of room to store things that are left in common areas. Labeled items can be return to the child's classroom

Students have voted on many spirit days to show their spirit throughout the school year.  Each month we will have a Chesterbrook Spiritwear or Blue/Yellow day and an additional spirit day of their selection.

October 29th - Freaky Friday Costume Day
School appropriate costumes- including no weapons or full face masks

New Online Programs Purchased for Chesterbrook Students to Support Student Learning

Chesterbrook has purchased two programs which will help our students in different areas of their development.  Both programs can be found on our "Chesterbrook Student Links" page.

Typing Club will help our students develop a skillset to more quickly access letters on the keyboard and develop proficiency in typed/written communication. Typing programs are usually best accessible to older students (3rd and up) with larger hands and increased fine motor skills to move fingers independently, however, all students will have access.

Dreambox is an additional online math program that teachers will be introducing in the coming weeks. Dreambox will adapt to a child's learning path and teachers can link valuable practice lessons to help students shore up foundational gaps. This is a brand new purchase and teachers have not yet introduced, so stay tuned for more details!
