Principal's Message

We hope that summer is settling in and fun plans are on the agenda for our Chesterbrook Chipmunks, families and our staff. We will miss our staff and families that are moving on and wish you all the very best. It's been a pleasure to support your children during this school year. While I'm getting a lot accomplished and was easily able to take some time last week to celebrate my daughter's high school graduation, the school is too quiet. Sharing my family photo with you as I'm a proud mom of a University of Tennessee bound young adult. Hard to believe how quickly these school years pass.

The planning for the new school year started way back in late winter and we are excited to begin renewed and refreshed in August. It's been great to meet many new families that will be starting at Chesterbrook in August.

Wishing you a wonderful summer!

Sincerely,
Stacy Kirkpatrick, Principal

Congratulations Pat Pence, Administrative Assistant

This summer, Mrs. Pence will be retiring from FCPS. Pat has been an incredible support to our staff, students and families over her eight years at Chesterbrook. The care and concern she has put in to making sure our staff have what they need and taking any little task she can off their plate, allowed our teachers to focus on their students.  Her dedication is going to be hard to match and certainly her smile, kindness and warm heart will be deeply missed.

We wish Pat a retirement filled with amazing travels, more time with her family, long walks with her dog Izzy and much joy.  She has earned it and will truly be missed.

Summer Office Hours - Summer Registration Note

Chesterbrook office will be open with limited hours (10-1) this summer and by appointment. Our school building is closed to programs this summer, so appointments will be needed as we help support you with limited staff.

This summer our wonderful Administrative Assistance, Pat Pence, will be retiring as of July 1st. Chesterbrook will also be closed while the building is under renovation for HVAC. Please reach out to Mrs. Kirkpatrick if you need to make an appointment or call our main line at 703-714-8200 and leave us a detailed message.

We encourage any families that need to register students for the 2022-23 school year to reach out to Mr. Troskey ASAP to set up a registration plan and time to bring in paperwork.

We said good by to many dear staff members that have made a positive impact on our community. We wish all the best to our teachers and support staff that are moving on from Chesterbrook.

Private Summer Tutoring with Chesterbrook Staff

We are often asked if staff are available to tutor over the summer or during the school year. We have compiled this list of CES staff that are available this summer to support the summer bridge as private tutors.

FCPS also provides free online tutoring services over the summer

FCPS students will continue to have unlimited access to 24/7, on-demand, online tutoring support services through Tutor.com this summer. Students are able to use Tutor.com to review and/or practice in subject areas of interest or need. Students may also choose to access other tools such as practice quizzes in a variety of subject areas, as well as self-paced study courses for SAT and ACT preparation.

Details about how students can access Tutor.com through archived courses in Schoology are provided in Summer Access at Tutor.com - Online Tutoring Services. Secondary students enrolled in summer Credit Recovery Academy, Online Campus, Online Economics and Personal Finance, and TJHSST summer courses will be able to access Tutor.com via their active summer course in Schoology.

Order School Supplies

During open house in August, the halls are lined with an organized box of your child's ordered school supplies. You arrive, it's all already here and you are set to begin the year. What could be easier? ORDER Deadline end of June!

Go to https://sproutsupplies.com and use the school code CES005 to order.

If you choose to purchase your own supplies, please visit https://www.chesterbrookpta.org/supplies for teacher selected lists by grade.  Please note, if you choose not to purchase the complete kit, there are specific items for grades 2-6 that are school specific that should be purchased and will be delivered directly to your child at school.

Questions? Please email [email protected].

2022-23 5th & 6th Grade Student Ambassadors

We are beginning to seek out our 5th and 6th grade student ambassadors for the new school year.  Interested students will be asked to sign up in August so we can begin planning for our activities throughout the school year.

If students know that they would like to serve Chesterbrook in a leadership position during their 5th or 6th grade year, they may also sign up now. There may be early opportunities to help with projects as we get the year up and running in August.

APPLY HERE!  Parents, please share this form with your student so they can complete the sign up if they are interested.  We will also remind our families in August of these opportunities.

Family Resource Center and Language Support

If you speak another language or need support through our Family Parent Resource Center, please use this contact list. Phone lines are available in eight different languages including Amharic, Chinese, Korean, Urdu, Arabic, Farsi, Spanish and Vietnamese.

Financial Need & School Supply Support for Students

We realize that the past couple of years have been harder on some families.  With soaring prices of gas, housing, food and other items it could be putting a financial strain on your family.  We can and want to support families that may be in need.

Did you know that our PTA has scholarship support for programs we offer during the school year and also summer camps?  Did you know that we can help with school supplies?

It will be important next year for families that could use assistance apply for support using the FRM application below. This will provide us approval to use support funds for your family in a confidential and supportive manner.

At anytime you may be in need, we hope you will reach out to our counselor, Heather Lomelin, [email protected], Social Worker, [email protected], or our administrators. This information is kept confidential as we work to support your family with available resources.

We want to ensure every child has the school supplies they need to start the new school year off. If your child(ren) will be needing support for school supplies, please reach out to us or complete this google form and we will confirm this support to ensure your child is ready.

Thank you,

CES Admin and Student Services Team

Message from CES Administrators

It has been great to see all the smiles as we have ended this school year in a more traditional manner with culminating learning activities and our end of the year parties. This past week we celebrated House Fest (some photos above), welcoming GMU's The Edge program to facilitate team building activities for our students across their houses. While students were not on the field, they enjoyed indoor activities in their houses. It was a fun filled week and we look forward to rounding out the year with a great closing week.

This year has been another unique year for everyone. Thank you for your support, communication and patience as we have navigated to support all of our students throughout this year. It truly is hard to believe this year is coming to a close.

Thank you to our wonderful PTA board, those that chaired our PTA events and volunteers that helped make it all happen.

Sincerely,

2022-23 School Year Calendar

Principal's Message

The past month since returning from Spring Break has flown by. Our students have been immersed in learning and showcasing their knowledge. Our 5th graders shared their global awareness research projects and explored  cultures in a hands on learning in the afternoon. Third grade held their annual GRECO day and students enjoyed an exploration of the ancient civilizations they have been studying this year. First grade held a plant eating party where they learned about healthy and delicious food choices. If you have been able to volunteer at one of these showcases for our teams, we thank you for your time and support of student learning. It has been wonderful to see our Chesterbrook traditions of learning return.

All of our third through sixth graders wrapped up the month with our state standardized testing while our primary students also finish end of the year assessments to show us all they have accomplished. Our student results are strong and we want to recognize the dedication of our teachers to provide high quality instruction, interventions and enrichments throughout the year. I could not be more proud of the focus and dedication of our students as they are wrapping up the year. SOL results will be available in Parent Vue and we will let you know when those are posted.

With three weeks left in our school year, we are not yet done with the fun and learning. I am looking forward to our end of the year concerts for our strings, band and choir students. Teachers are continuing to wrap up end of the year assessments as we capture their growth and plan for needs for the 22-23 school year. We also are planning for our team building days from May 31 - June 2nd where students will be working within their Houses at House Fest. See below if you would like to join us and volunteer. We would love to have you! We also look forward to welcoming our McLean High School Seniors that will be graduating. We will welcome our Chesterbrook Alumni back on May 31st at 1:30 to take a "Memory Walk" before they walk the stage at graduation on June 1st.

Lastly, I appreciate everyone weathering the latest round of covid cases we have encountered since the break. We have seen spikes in some areas and will alert you if we have a determined outbreak with your class or grade level. This past week we did report an outbreak in a grade level and informed close contacts of possible exposure. We will continue to try to stay on top of the cases and ask that parents continue diligence in keeping sick kids home. For parent convenience, click here for the Daily Health Questionnaire.
We are continuing to try to eat outdoors when the weather allows and practicing good hygiene. I cannot thank our lunch volunteers enough for the consistency and care they have provided our students all year. When we began this year, eating outdoors was a challenging task and this small crew of dedicated parents made it happen. I'm forever grateful to each of them.

As a Chesterbrook staff, we are excited to celebrate the hard work and efforts of our students as we close out the school year over the next three weeks. This year brought us back together and we all showed flexibility and care in supporting each other through the celebrations and difficult times. I'm grateful to this community for your understanding and support as we have continued to navigate. Wishing you all a wonderful week!

Warmly,

Stacy Kirkpatrick, Principal

Word Master Challenge Top Award

Megan C, CES 6th grader, recently earned Individual Highest Honors in this year’s WordMasters Challenge™—a national vocabulary competition involving nearly 125,000 students annually.  With three meets spanning the school year, Megan completed the overall competition with a cumulative score of 57 out of a possible 60 points.  Highest Honors are reserved for students who place among the top 10-15 students in their division.

The WordMasters Challenge™ is an exercise in critical thinking that first encourages students to become familiar with a set of interesting new words (considerably harder than grade level), and then challenges them to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical relationships.  Working to solve the analogies helps students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically.

The Word Masters team, which meets before school, was coached by Ms. Beggan this school year. We look forward to continuing this program next year and watching our kids continue to challenge themselves in this enrichment program.

McLean HS/Senior Memory Walk at Chesterbrook - May 31st 1:45 PM

We invite high school seniors who are past students of Chesterbrook Elementary to come to CES in their cap and gown for pictures and a graduation walk around our school on Tuesday, May 31st.  Seniors should gather at 1:30 p.m. in front of the school with the walk at 1:45PM.  We will capture this moment then and then have our current Chesterbrook students congratulate them as they walk the halls and reminisce about their time in Elementary! Congratulations to our 2022 high school graduates!

Lost and Found Last Chance

Next week we will place lost and found items outside on June 1st through June 3rd of next week.  We have quite the collection of sweatshirts and coats as well as some water bottles. Items will be donated after June 3rd.

Family Return to School Survey

Now that FCPS has transitioned back to a more typical school experience, the school division is interested in hearing from parents/caregivers about how the school year has gone for their students. You will have an opportunity to provide your feedback on our Family Return to School Survey which will open Tuesday, May 31, and close Friday, June 10.

The survey is being administered by the FCPS Office of Research and Strategic Improvement, which provides objective research and data-based information back to the school division’s leadership. The survey is part of the office’s continuing evaluation of the pandemic’s impact on our school division. We encourage all FCPS parents/caregivers to respond to the survey and share their experiences whether positive or negative. The information you and other families provide will be used, along with other data, to inform FCPS leadership about the return to five days a week of in-person instruction, and support FCPS’ efforts to make improvements that support schools, students, and staff. Principal's Message

Spring is in the air and hopefully the cold weather is finally on its way out. I want to take a moment to wish you all a wonderful upcoming spring break.  I know our students, staff and families can use a little down time to relax and renew.

I'm sure you noticed that we have had a couple of recent covid cases reported. We are still monitoring symptoms and encourage parents to keep children home that you are monitoring for illness. We send a test kit home with any symptomatic child in the clinic for return to school. If you are able to monitor and test kids at home that are sick, it would be a good idea to prevent spread and keep our community safe. We all want a strong return after Spring Break and finish to the school year.

As we return to school after the break there are many items to keep on our calendars between end of year assessments and the fun activities returning to our school community. I could not be more excited to have had our recent book fair busy with families, watched class photos taking place last week, this evening's International night and planning with staff for field trips and end of the year festivities. It is hard to believe that it was my first year as Chesterbrook's principal we were able to last experience these end of the year festivities. Thank you to all our staff and parents working hard to make these special events happen for our students. It makes a difference!

One new event we are excited to hold this year will be a fun end of the year House Event for our students and staff. We have planned a three day event (May 31, June 1st and June 2nd) with "The Edge" that will allow our entire school to participate in team building activities on site. "The Edge"  will be leading students in our house families through Team Development and Experiential Learning Activities. We have set aside three days at the end of May for this event. Students will build skills with students and staff in their House Family.

Additionally, we have scheduled our end of year promotion for our 6th graders on Thursday evening at 6pm. This special night will be held at Longfellow Middle School due to space constraints at Chesterbrook. Sixth grade parents, please save the date! We expect to allow up to 4 people per family to attend but this may be adjusted slightly. More information to come!

Watch your grade level news for other fun end of the year activities. Exciting times ahead! I look forward to seeing many of you this evening at International Night - lets bundle up because we are outside on the blacktop.

Sincerely,

Stacy Kirkpatrick, Principal

Brownie Troop Gives Back to the School Community

Chesterbrook Brownie Troop 50149 gave back to our school community this past weekend. Our brownies have been studying the environment and ways they can help. They chose to raise money to purchase three Eastern Redbud trees, which they planted in front of Chesterbrook. The trees will help our environment and beautify the school. Thank you to Troop 50149 for helping our school community with your generous gift.

Chesterbrook Students Recognized in WordMasters Challenge Competition

Chesterbrook students  recently received recognition in this year’s WordMasters Challenge™—a national vocabulary competition involving nearly 125,000 students annually.

Competing in the difficult Blue Division of the WordMasters Challenge™, sixth grader Megan C. earned a perfect score of 20 on the challenge. Nationally, only 64 sixth graders achieved this result. Megan also achieved an outstanding score of 19 on the first challenge. Other students from Chesterbrook Elementary School who achieved outstanding results on the second challenge include sixth grader Isabella B. and Carter J. Fifth grader, Alison S., achieved an outstanding result on the first challenge. The students were coached in preparation for the WordMasters Challenge™ by 4th grade teacher Kaitlin Beggan.

The WordMasters Challenge™ is an exercise in critical thinking that first encourages students to become familiar with a set of interesting new words (considerably harder than grade level), and then challenges them to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical relationships.

Kiss N Ride Safety

It has been noticed a few parents are dropping students off on side roads or out in front of the school to avoid the Kiss N Ride line. The line is moving swiftly and safely, so please adhere to the safety precautious and take the few minutes to drive through K&R or park and walk your children to the school. Your support is appreciated!

SOL Testing Calendar

We ask our 3rd through 6th grade parents to mark your calendars to avoid scheduling appointments that will keep your child out of school on these dates. We begin testing in the morning and student have as much time as they need to complete these assessments.

Chesterbrook AAP Level II - III Screening Information

GovDelivery2 months 4 weeks ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) Screening for School-Based (Level II-III) Services

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of advanced learners.

Screening for Levels II-III

Students can be screened for school-based (level II-III) AAP services at any time in the school year. In the spring, local schools review data on all students to determine services for the start of the next school year.

Screening Process for Levels II-III

Multiple criteria are reviewed holistically to determine eligibility for all FCPS advanced academic services. Committees consider student work from opportunities with AAP lessons, examples of student reasoning or gifted behaviors from class discussions and activities, progress reports, achievement and ability scores, and parent or guardian input. Committees consider whether students have access to a group of students with similar academic needs to support academic conversations and growth in the classroom.

Appeals Process for Levels II-III

If a parent or guardian wishes to appeal an ineligible decision, they may submit an appeal with new data for consideration by the local school screening committee. This new information should be submitted to the Advanced Academic Resource Teacher or Assistant Principal.

School-Based Services Overview School-Based Services in Elementary School

FCPS offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in Grades K-12. The continuum of services approach allows for a focus on matching services to students’ needs rather than labeling students. Students have:

  • Multiple entry points for deeper learning opportunities in specific areas of need as they develop.
  • A cluster group of students with similar academic needs to support student learning and growth.

Teachers, administrators, and Advanced Academic Resource Teachers (AARTs) work together to provide the following levels of school-based services at the elementary level:

Tier 1 Access to AAP Curriculum and Strategies, Grades K-6 (Level I)

All students have opportunities to think critically, reason, and problem-solve.

  • All teachers use critical and creative thinking strategies in their lessons
  • Classroom teachers provide opportunities using materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework a minimum of once per

Because Level I services are for all FCPS students, there is not a screening process.

Differentiated Lessons in Areas of Academic Strength, Grades K-6 (Level II)

Some students require differentiation beyond the needs of age-level peers in their class in at least one specific subject area. Classroom teachers may adjust instruction for students in these areas by:

  • Providing different assignments and resources using materials from the AAP Curriculum
  • Grouping students by their strengths, interests, and

Level II Services are re-evaluated each year and may change from year to year.

Part-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-6 (Level III)

Some students have advanced academic abilities in multiple subject areas and require differentiation beyond the needs of age-level peers in their class in multiple content areas.

  • Students work with other students that have similar academic needs through weekly pull-out classes or weekly co-taught lessons with the AART and classroom
  • Teachers provide frequent opportunities to use materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework in Language Arts, science, social studies, and/or

Level III services continue through Grade 6. Students do not need to be evaluated each year.

Screening for Full-Time (Level IV) Services Screening Timeline for Level IV

Screening for level IV AAP services happens at the district/central level rather than by local schools. For your planning for next school year, please know that screening for Level IV services occurs during two specific screening cycles:

  • Fall screening is available for students who are new to FCPS since
    • Fall referrals are due in early October (contact the AART for more information).
  • Spring screening is available for any Grade 2-7 FCPS-enrolled
    • The referral window is from the first day of school - December 15,

For more information, please visit the AAP website at: https://www.fcps.edu/registration/advanced- academics-identification-and-placement/current-fcps-students.

Principal's Message

As the year moves along, it only seems to move faster. We are quickly nearing the end of the 3rd quarter and Spring Break is right around the corner. Recently we had a PTA meeting where I was able to share the excitement of plans ahead for many PTA sponsored in person events, field trips, instructional learning celebrations and end of the year festivities. So many things are in the works. Look below for calendar items to add to your family to-do's. There are many great events including International Night and Fun Fair.  It's so exciting to see the list of our calendar events returning!

I am delighted to be working with a special girl scout troop that has donated and will be planting 3 new red bud trees in the front of our school building on Saturday morning, March 26th. After losing a couple trees in this area over the past few years, it will be a beautiful site to restore trees to this year.  I'm thankful for their gift to the school and to be able to watch them flourish over the years ahead, just as our students do.

Our book fair has kicked off and we welcome you in Saturday morning to browse and pick out some new titles for your children. Mrs. Reid and our PTA have put together a wonderful fair for all to find something to enjoy. Remember that 25% of all proceeds go directly back to our library to directly support our students.

As the weather warms, we are noticing more families walking to school. We are watching the care you all are taking and our routines have only made the school a safer place to arrive and leave.  Please continue to be diligent and watch for those walking and biking and remember to pull as far forward as you can in the K&R line. I want to give a huge shout out to our amazing patrols on the bus, at kiss n ride and in the halls for the great support they give our students day in and out. I'm so impressed by their leadership and the positive support they are providing.

Our Yearbook design team is hard at work. Have you ordered your yearbook to capture this special year for our Chesterbrook Chipmunks? The link can be found below in our calendar section.

Have a wonderful weekend and I hope to see many of you at the Book Fair Saturday morning!

Sincerely,

Stacy Kirkpatrick, Principal

VDH Test to Stay (TTS) Program

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) has been working closely with the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) to implement a Test to Stay strategy in our local school divisions. Test to Stay is an extra layer of prevention combined with our current layered prevention strategies and will be used in the event of an outbreak in the school setting.

The purpose of this letter is to inform you of the Test to Stay program in your school and ask your permission to enroll your student. All testing will be voluntary and only students with a signed consent form on file will be tested. Test kits are provided free of charge.

Test to Stay (TTS) is a practice that allows unvaccinated or not yet fully vaccinated students identified as close contacts in a confirmed COVID-19 outbreak (by the Fairfax County Health Department), to remain in school.

Test to Stay (TTS) requires the following”

  • Students take a rapid home COVID-19 test every morning for 5 days after the exposure.
If the test is negative, students are allowed to stay in school.
  • Students must wear a mask for 10 days after the exposure
Students must remain without symptoms for 10 days after the exposure.

I encourage you to please consider allowing your student to participate in the program, as it is an important tool available to us to keep our school community healthy and our schools open.

To allow your student to participate, please complete the attached consent form and return it to Dave Troskey ([email protected]) as soon as possible. If you do not wish for your student to participate, no further action is required.

Family Engagement Survey

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

On Sunday, March 13, in the afternoon, you will receive an email from Fairfax County Public Schools via K12 Insight regarding FCPS’ Family Engagement Survey. Your feedback is critical in helping to inform and improve our practices to best support our students.

Taking this survey will also help strengthen the partnership between your family and your school. When that partnership is strong, students can experience a range of benefits including improved school readiness, higher student achievement, and better social skills and behavior.

FCPS is partnering with independent firm K12 Insight to administer the survey. It will be available in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Korean, Arabic, Chinese, Urdu, Farsi, and Amharic. Please visit our Family Engagement Survey webpage for more information and look for the survey in your inbox on March 13. Your voice matters!

For questions regarding the FCPS Family Engagement Survey, please contact Heather Lomelin, School Counselor, at [email protected].
