Kiss N Ride Update

We have been working with safety and security to provide the safest methods of getting cars in quickly.

Only RIGHT turns into the Chesterbrook parking lot will be permitted. Please do not hold up traffic on Kirby trying to turn left.  When exiting the lot please continue to ONLY turn RIGHT.

We have been able to get cars in and out in a timely manner and appreciate your patience during peak drop off and pickup times.

In order to expedite pickup, we have found the housing students in the gym is the most efficient in calling for your children. Thank you for using your car hang tag so we can call children quickly.

Dear Families,

Earlier today, Dr. Braband shared more information regarding In-Person learning, including the updated CDC guidance which will allow schools the opportunity to transition from 6 feet to 3 feet social distancing at some times, thereby possibly providing more days of In-Person instruction. Please understand that we are no longer accepting changes to in-person attendance as we focus on our next phase.

You can read Dr. Braband’s full message by clicking on this link.

We are committed to bringing back as many of our In-Person students to four days of instruction as our capacity restraints allow, beginning with students identified by our school staff through the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) process. FCPS has trained our FCPS teachers and leaders in a process to be able to identify and provide students additional supports through the MTSS process. We have used this process to support students for many years to provide interventions and extensions for students.

You are welcome to view more information on the MTSS process in FCPS here.

Please be aware that a variety of factors prevent us from expanding 4 day return as far as we would like to do immediately, and our current classroom capacities may prevent us from expanding the option to all students who would like to return. We need time to work out the details regarding space and staffing, such as the continued requirement for students to eat meals (breakfast, snack and lunch) at 6 feet apart. We must continue to adhere to all of the CDC regulations and FCPS guidelines for furniture, transportation changes, classroom setup and scheduling changes.

Please be patient as we work through the updated guidance to see if we are able to shift additional In-Person students to four day instruction in the near future, recognizing that we may not be able to honor four-days for all grade levels or in every classroom within a grade level due to the factors shared above.

Should our capacity guidance allow your child to return to school for four days each week, our school staff will reach out to you. Please know that we are proactively working to accommodate as many students as possible and there are no actions you need to take at this time in order for your child to be considered for four days of in-person instruction. I will be honest that my email was overrun today with requests to return. I realize how important this is to so many of our families. If you would like to submit information or ask questions, please enter information here. It will better allow me to track and respond to student needs and questions.

Sincerely,

Stacy Kirkpatrick, Principal

Principal's Message

This year has been nothing short of challenging at every pass. We have worked tirelessly to make every change, turn and hurdle that has been presented. I want you all to know that as a principal, I work closely with a network of other principals from my McLean Pyramid as well as the collaborative team of new principals I came in with three years ago. Additionally, our network of principals across elementary is strong and we share ideas and lean on each other. Our collaborative team of pyramid principals across McLean meets regularly and communicates in between, this year sometimes daily, to strategize and work together on the challenges presented. I say this to let you know we do this difficult work together, we are a team and we all want what is best for our collective schools across McLean and FCPS. Every principal is doing their very best with the individual situations presented to them, as we always do. I am thankful for my network!

As we prepare to return our in-person students to 4 days of instruction next week, I wanted to share a few reminders:

  • Students should have a towel, blanket should they be eating outside.  Many of our upper grades will have this a daily or regular option.
  • All students need to have a water bottle with them daily.  Please make sure it is a good size to accommodate them for at least 1/2 their school day so refills are not needed often.
  • Cold lunches will continue at Chesterbrook. We are unable to accommodate 4 days and also meet the needs of hot lunches this school year.
  • All students need to have fully charged laptops brought to school on a daily basis. We are now assessing the need of our kindergarten students bringing their laptops to school. I tried to avoid this but we want our students using our best devices. Teachers will follow up with kindergarten families on this possibility.
  • Bus riders will be on a 4 day route beginning soon. Transportation is working as fast as they can to meet the needs of our students. We ask you to check ParentVue to identify the days are in for your child. Call our front office if you have questions.

Kiss N Ride
Thank you for your patience as we have tweaked our system to the best it can be. A few reminders for keeping our kiss n ride smooth.

  • No left turn into the parking lot during pickup and dismissal if it impedes traffic. You can use your best judgement, but at peak times do not turn left. Angry drivers waiting will speed up or drive on the side which could cause an accident or a pedestrian to be hit.
  • Yellow Car Name Tags are vital to quick pickup, thank you for having them visible.
  • Student will be kept in the gym to be announced as you arrive. We announce names on the microphone so they can clearly hear and exit.
  • If you are waiting a while for a child that has not yet arrived you will be asked to park in the lot and wait, so we can continue loading students.
  • Use caution and patience and do not pull around another car unless asked to do so by staff.
  • Do your best to not arrive for dismissal before 3:25. With more students back at school, we can quickly block Kirby if cars stack up too early.  We get them loaded and out quickly.
  • If you would like to have your child added to a bus route, please complete this google form and we will make the change. Transportation is doing the best they can to accommodate.

Please reach out to me at SKirkpatrick@fcps.edu, if you have questions.

Sincerely,

Stacy Kirkpatrick, Principal

A BIG Thank You!

As we have returned students to the building, all classrooms have benefitted from donations.  We wanted to send a huge thank you to our community for donating sanitizing wipes and tissues to the school.  We greatly appreciate them and have put them to good use!

We always welcome these donations to support our classrooms.

Flexible Seating CES Wish List

As we return our students to the building we have some identified needs that will help our school support students. There are a variety of items in our wish list, including seated desks, which will allow our students the benefit to spread out and move when they need to. These could also be used for students eating while seated on the floor/ground. Our teachers appreciate any support, but please know this is only a wish and not an expectation of any family to purchase an item. These items would benefit the school as a whole.

Principal's Message

We have had an amazing first week back with our in-person kids. Thank you for your continued support, we couldn't do this without you.

This week I enjoyed celebrations of the work we have done to open this year.  This is also Administrative Professionals Appreciation week and I personally want to extend my gratitude to our office team. Where would we be without Pat, Dave and Holley!!! Their flexibility and perseverance to support the work needed throughout the year was always met with a smile on their face and a can do attitude. Pat, Holley and Dave have been in person since August and helped navigate each hurdle and supported the needs of administration, parents, students and staff. The positivity, humor and love they bring to our school is unmatched. I am truly grateful for them each and every day. My sincerest gratitude for all you do!

Our picnic tables have been ordered for the back playground area and we are thankful to our PTA for supporting this purchase. Thank you to Geoff Inget our PTA treasurer for the hard work to move forward with this purchase and to Tammy Mehta for leading the charge in getting the put together. We had one smaller order come in last week and they are already together.  We have another order coming in on Wednesday or next week.  Chesterbrook will be the place to be! Parents will have a place to hang out when your children are doing their evening events on the field or during your visit to the playground on the weekend.

Wishing you all a wonderful and restful weekend!

Sincerely,

Stacy Kirkpatrick

Summer Quest Updates BIG NEWS!

We have now increased our cap on Summer Quest Camps to 12 students. What does this mean? If you are currently on a waiting list you will automatically receive an email to enroll in the camp if there is space. If you checked before and a camp was either on  waitlist or full, be sure to check back. We encourage you to wait list for anything you are interested in as there has been continual movement.

  • Baking Fun Week 3 will now be offered as a Concurrent Class. You can choose to be in-person or virtual!
  • Fun with Friends Week 4 will now be offered as an In-Person Camp!
  • Expanded Grade Levels for many classes.

The waitlist is the best way for you to get a chance at a spot for your child.

Teacher and Instructional Staff Appreciation Week

This year has been filled with so many obstacles, but one through line that remained this year is the devotion our Chesterbrook teachers and instructional support staff have for our students. Our teachers are highly skilled in working with children and this year have shown that their personal love of learning is ever-present. They stretched, learned, created and collaborated to support the needs of our students. They invested the time to know their students and plan for their needs day in and day out, virtually and then in person.

Thank you for taking the time this week to express your thanks and gratitude. A simple note, email, or card from you or your child go a long way to showing gratitude. Let's send them all our love this week and as we close out this school year. They certainly deserve it.

Message from the Principal

After a year that we have rewritten so many times, it feels odd that it is actually coming to an end. In many ways, I'm glad to have closure on this most unusual school year and yet it feels that it has been so short.

Looking ahead at the next two weeks we look forward to celebrating all the accomplishments of our students. They have persevered through a time we will not forget and I am confident they have learned along the way. It was different than what one envisions for their new kindergarten student and the many playdates and new in school experiences, how students thought their year would go with traditions of Greco Day, the fifth grade Dig, sixth grade Science Fair, Book Fairs, or enjoying weekly pencil sales in the hall.  While many things changed, our students still grew in different ways and I'm thankful for the appreciation for school, hard work and perseverance I have witnessed and tremendous support from our community. We got through this school year together and these final weeks should be about celebrating what we were able to accomplish in this very different school year. As I have shared with our staff, the 2020-21 theme this year was "Together We Can" as a school community, "Together We Did."

We continue to face challenges as we work to close out and reunite all of our students virtually and in-person. This is not easy and we are doing the best we can to recognize our 100% virtual students and celebrate along with them while we are closing out our in-person students. There are opportunities during these final weeks for our 100% virtual students to join their classes, if this is an option. I understand that not all our students can do this and we will do all we can to make our closing events as inclusive as possible.

With Appreciation,

Stacy Kirkpatrick

CES Summer Reading and Practice Update 6.14.2021

Summer is Here

As we begin to emerge back into a summer where the activities for our children are returning, we want them to play, swim and be with friends. Time to visit family, socialize with friends and free play should be a priority for our kids.

We have received requests for supporting student summer learning. We can help our students retain skills they gained this year by encouraging them to read for pleasure and review basic skills in language arts and math. The activities below will help support parents in providing structures that can be used in small chunks for summer learning.

Chesterbrook READS Summer Program

This summer Chesterbrook is offering for students to participate in our Summer Reading Program. Students are required to read six books and complete a review for three of those books. Attached are directions, examples, and a blank summer reading form. Students should turn in review forms to their teacher next year.

Summer Reading Directions   &    Summer Reading Student Form

Students may submit Summer Reading Recommendations on our CES Flipgrid. Mrs. Jennings will review subissions.

If you have any questions please contact our librarian Meredith Reid at mareid@fcps.edu
