Transportation Update - Buses 4 & 6

Transportation continues to work through driver shortages and supporting needs as drivers are out sick across FCPS.

This week bus 4 and 6 have been picked up about 4:05 on one bus. The plan is for bus 4 students to be dropped off first and then bus 6 routes will follow. From what we understand, this will be the plan for the time being.  We are sorry for the delays that have been happening.

Transportation this Afternoon - Snow Closure Updates

Brooksfield has announced they will be closed this afternoon.

Additionally, all afterschool activites at CES are cancelled - CHESS and ART classes will NOT meet.

Please update PUP if you have not, so your child's teacher will know how to send them home. Changes must be entered in PUP by 2:30 PM.

We hope everyone is up and running in our PUP system.  If you are not in PUP, please contact our office so we can assist you in getting this setup. It has been so helpful to support our students.

Common Sense Media

Common Sense Media is an excellent resource for families looking to reinforce digital citizenship at home. Not only does this resource provide tv show, movie, and game reviews, it also provides families with resources to have conversations with their children regarding their online presence and behavior. As we continue to navigate our digital world, it is of the utmost importance to build our digital citizenship skills right from the start. Teachers use Common Sense Education to teach students about media balance, privacy & security, digital footprints, and relationships & communication. Common Sense Media has created some helpful media tips as we strive to find a balance in our digital lives and reinforce many skills that are taught within class. In addition, they have provided a Family Media Agreement for families who are looking to establish some expectations and norms around media in their home. Finally, Common Sense Media invites you to join Tech Balance – a free program that provides tips about how to practice healthy media habits at home with your family. If you are interested in signing up, please visit https://www.commonsensemedia.org/techbalance. If you have any questions about how Chesterbrook and FCPS encourages digital citizenship, contact Megan Brown at [email protected].

Student Covid Screening

FCPS will move to a dynamic testing plan.  Screening testing will be available during moderate, substantial and high community transmission to the greatest extent practicable in alignment with CDC guidance. Screening testing for students will not be offered during low transmission.

At this time, we will still have student testing until notified that transmission rates are consistently lower. Chesterbrook has been scheduled for diagnostic testing on Monday of each week. Currently, we have 68 consented for testing in the portal and will test about 50 weekly.

One-time parent/legal guardian consent is required to begin COVID screening testing for a student to be tested at school. You may withdraw your consent for testing at any time. If you want your child to begin participating in COVID-19 screening testing, you must pre-register your child(ren) and provide consent using the LTS secure online portal. If you do not want your child to participate in COVID-19 screening testing, no action is required. You will have the option each week to update your child’s vaccination and consent for testing.

For all the details about optional COVID-19 screening testing, visit the FCPS website and review the FCPS COVID-19 Screening Testing Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document.  Screening testing is a recommended layered prevention strategy.

Principal's Message

February flew by quickly! Messages and displays of kindness fill our building from the work over of our students this past month. It's touching to see how our students have embraced the many ways to spread kindness across our school community through uplifting poetry, artistic displays, acts of kindness and individual notes of encouragement and appreciation.

Mrs. Thomas and I have been meeting with each grade level for a mid year check in on Student Rights and Responsibilities to reframe our expectations and allow students the opportunity to embrace the differences each of us bring to make our community a very special place to learn and grow. It is important that each student know that they are a very important part of our school and their contributions are valued. Our year long PBL "How can you, as a Chesterbrook Chipmunk, share your identity and positively influence our Chesterbrook home so it continues to grow as a welcoming place for everyone?" continues to shape the framework for these important discussions.

As we think about our PBL question, we move forward into a week of change in our community, a time when masking will become a choice of our staff and students. While Covid is still present in our world, we want to safely move forward supporting everyone in the choices that are best for your family. Please discuss your preferences with your children. They should feel confident and will be supported in the choice your family makes. I want to assure our community we will do all we can to continue providing a positive and supportive community for our young learners. No division of masking will take place and no student will be treated differently for their choice. Our staff will also work to reinforce this is a choice and prepare our students for this transition. Hopefully soon, we will all look forward with this difficult time in the rear view and brighter days ahead.

With appreciation for your support,

Stacy Kirkpatrick, Principal

Kiss N Ride Reminders

The past few weeks we have extended our kiss n ride drop off/pick up area all the way down the sidewalk. This increases the number of cars we can support at one time. School begins at 8:50, so we ask that all students try to arrive by 8:45 to be in class and ready for morning meeting on time.

When making u turns, please do so at openings at entrance #1, which is a safer alternative to the bus exit, which places cars on the crosswalk.  Making a U turn in the middle of the road (not at an entrance/opening or intersection) is considered illegal.  We appreciate your understanding and use of caution.  This is important as we will have more walkers and bus riders as the weather improves.

Principal Evaluation Questionnaire

Your Views and Opinions Are Important!

This spring all Chesterbrook parents/guardians and staff will be contacted through email with a link to the FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form Online.

This questionnaire is part of my Performance Evaluation Program and offers parents/guardians an opportunity to provide anonymous input about various topics related to our school.

Providing input on my work as your principal will provide information on the following areas:

  • Instructional Leadership
  • School Climate
  • Management (Human Resources and Organization)
  • Communication and Community Relations
  • Professionalism

Understanding that this has been another unusual year, the impacts of COVID-19 will be taken into consideration when reviewing the feedback.

The questionnaire will be collected online between March 7 and March 18. When you receive an email from FCPS Surveys, please take a few minutes to complete the questionnaire. The results of this feedback are strictly confidential.

Your opinions matter!

With appreciation for your support and feedback,

Family Engagement Survey

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

On Sunday, March 13, in the afternoon, you will receive an email from Fairfax County Public Schools via K12 Insight regarding FCPS’ Family Engagement Survey. Your feedback is critical in helping to inform and improve our practices to best support our students.

Taking this survey will also help strengthen the partnership between your family and your school. When that partnership is strong, students can experience a range of benefits including improved school readiness, higher student achievement, and better social skills and behavior.

FCPS is partnering with independent firm K12 Insight to administer the survey. It will be available in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Korean, Arabic, Chinese, Urdu, Farsi, and Amharic. Please visit our Family Engagement Survey webpage for more information and look for the survey in your inbox on March 13. Your voice matters!

VDH Test to Stay (TTS) Program

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

VDH Test to Stay (TTS) Program

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) has been working closely with the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) to implement a Test to Stay strategy in our local school divisions. Test to Stay is an extra layer of prevention combined with our current layered prevention strategies and will be used in the event of an outbreak in the school setting.

The purpose of this letter is to inform you of the Test to Stay program in your school and ask your permission to enroll your student. All testing will be voluntary and only students with a signed consent form on file will be tested. Test kits are provided free of charge.

Test to Stay (TTS) is a practice that allows unvaccinated or not yet fully vaccinated students identified as close contacts in a confirmed COVID-19 outbreak (by the Fairfax County Health Department), to remain in school.

Test to Stay (TTS) requires the following”

  • Students take a rapid home COVID-19 test every morning for 5 days after the exposure.
If the test is negative, students are allowed to stay in school.
  • Students must wear a mask for 10 days after the exposure
Students must remain without symptoms for 10 days after the exposure.

I encourage you to please consider allowing your student to participate in the program, as it is an important tool available to us to keep our school community healthy and our schools open.

To allow your student to participate, please complete the attached consent form and return it to Dave Troskey ([email protected]) as soon as possible. If you do not wish for your student to participate, no further action is required.
