SOL Scores Posted in SIS ParentVUE

Families can find Standards of Learning (SOL) reports for spring testing in the SIS ParentVUE Documents section on or before the last day of school. Log in to your ParentVUE account to access the following:

• For all students – the official SOL Score Report with overall and reporting category performance for all spring tests.
• For grade 3-8 students – the SOL Growth Parent Report shows performance over time for state reading and math tests completed this school year.

Thursday New Family Meet and Greet Updated Time 2:30PM

I apologize for the late change, however, need to change the coffee to the afternoon on Thursday.  Please join me at 2:30 PM in our school library.

Principal's Message

Opening Day is Here!!! We look forward to welcoming everyone back this morning for the 2024-25 school year. Our theme this school year is "Everyday is a Chance to Grow." We look forward to supporting each of your children as they dive into learning, explore new opportunities to gain new skills and build new friendships.  A wonderful new school year lies ahead filled with tremendous possibilities. 

We will work to keep communications as streamlined as possible. In order to stay informed, please try to skim each weekly school email and grade level communication. We will also use talking point texts to communicate as efficiently as possible.

Verify Pick Up Patrol
Each family need to confirm your Pick Up Patrol account or it will expire. Verify your account and set your child's default way home ASAP.  Only 56% of families have verified at this time. Let's hit 75% before 2PM today!!!

Lunch Volunteers
We are looking for a few volunteers that can consistently support our students at lunch. Building relationships with kids throughout the year further supports positive behaviors during lunch time, so ask parents to commit to weekly support or regular subbing if taking on this opportunity. If you are interested in supporting in this role, please fill out this google form.

Kiss N Ride Procedures
Hang Tags will be used to identify all K&R families. Until we are able to distribute, we ask all families to have a paper with last name written large to display at dismissal. Students will wait in the gym until your car has arrived. We will announce the name of the child and they will meet you at the K&R loop.

Walker Drop Off and Pick Up
We will continue with two areas for parent drop off and pickup- Flag Pole & Trailers by the Gym. Having a sign with your last name (especially at the gym) will help us identify you quickly.

Principal's Message

What a wonderful first week! It is a collaborative effort between our staff, students and families that made it a wonderful week. Thank you! Welcoming all of our student back and watching them settle into the start a new, promising school year brings so much joy. So many great things are in store with new curriculum, new friends and an amazing staff ready to support each of your children.

Students participated in morning meetings with peer greetings, upper grade students were introduced to opportunities in strings, band and chorus and we all went over the basic routines for the school year in new grades. We quickly watched our newest Chipmunks find their way as some of our wonderful upper grade students served as leaders to help them during dismissal.

We are rolling out ourStudent Ambassador and Patrol appplications so our student leaders can be appointed in their roles to help our school community thrive. Fifth and Sixth grade teachers will be sharing information with students on these opportunities so they can apply for opportunities this week. 

This Tuesday evening we will host our annual Back to School BBQ with hotdogs and potluck meals from families.  Please join us and bring your favorite dish to share. We ask that any item brought is nut free for the safety of our community. Sign up here to bring a dish and join us. I hope to see many of our families at our community event. 

We encourage our Chipmunks to show their spirit this Thursday by wearing their spirit gear or our colors - blue and yellow/gold. Show your Chipmunk Pride and joy to be back for a new year.

Give Consent for Digital Resources for Your Child:  Student consent forms previously available on ParentVue have been moved to the Parent Digital Consent System (PDC). 

3 Hr Early Release Student Childcare Survey - We require 100% response to this survey to ensure we can plan for all students who cannot go home early on our Early Release Mondays for state required teacher training. Childcare will be provided by CES staff until our 3:35 dismissal. We are currently at a 70% response rate and working to plan for this support which is averaging 200+ children. COMPLETE form ASAP if you have not done so.

Please save the date for August 29, 2024 for Celebrate McLean. It will run from 4pm-6:30pm, prior to our football home opener vs Meridian. We will have games, food, DJ and tables from our clubs and sports. We look forward to another amazing day!

 

📵 Phones Down, Engagement Up: FCPS Cell Phone Policy

Keeping cell phones and watches off during the school day helps students focus and learn. All smart watches should be in School Mode or Airplane mode during the school day. Having a phone free environment also boosts positive social behavior. Review FCPS’ cell phone expectations by grade level with your child and help keep our classrooms free of distractions! If an urgent matter arises during the day and you need to reach your child, please call our office at 703-714-8200.

Fairfax County Public Schools wants all parents and caregivers to understand its policies regarding surveys, records, curriculum, privacy, and related rights.

In its Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights and Opt-Out Forms (Annual Notice), FCPS provides explanations of the rights listed above as well as forms that may be used to exercise opt-out choices. Two versions of the Annual Notice are available: a grades K-8 version and a grades 9-12 version. Parents/caregivers with children at different grade levels should read each applicable version of the Annual Notice, because the notices and opt-out rights vary depending on the student’s grade level.

Principal's Message

We had a wonderful turn out last week for our beginning of the year Chesterbrook community pot luck and cookout. Ms. Macdonald and I enjoyed grilling up the hotdogs and adding to the many wonderful dishes provided by families. It was a beautiful and special night and I hope you had a chance to connect with some families in our community. Check out some of our photos below. Thank you for coming out to celebrate the start of another school year!

Tomorrow evening, Thursday, September 5th, we look forward to seeing parents at our Chesterbrook Back to School Night.  We have set up the evening to accommodate families with multiple children during our evening schedule and also welcome you to join our PTA. 

Begin the evening at 5:45 with our PTA for our first meeting of the school year. Classrooms will open for grade level and specialist sessions at 6:25. You will have three opportunities to visit your child's classroom and meet teachers throughout the night at 6:30, 7:00 and 7:30PM. Our preschool teachers will welcome there families from 6:30 - 7:15. 

We now have a new Chesterbrook fence sign in our playground area thanks to the Chesterbrook classes of 2022 and 2023.  Thank you to our former students and parent volunteers that made this happen!

Chesterbrook would like to welcome our new family liaison, Andrea Adamson.  As the family liaison, Mrs. Adamson is here to connect parents to resources needed between home and school.  If you are new to McLean, new to CES, or been here but need help finding the right resources please contact her and she will help guide you.  As a parent of a Chipmunk and a Highlander, Andrea brings a wealth of knowledge to our CES community and is looking forward to working with our families.  Andrea will be in the office on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Principal's Message

Happy Fall, Chipmunk Families! We hope this first month of school has been wonderful for all our students. Everyone is settled in and off to a great start.

Beginning of year assessments for our first through sixth grade students are wrapping up and just beginning for our preschool and kindergarten students. As we get the reports in for our student beginning of the year assessments, we will share out these reports to our families and plan to offer an upcoming session for parents on supporting your students at home. Reports will also load in SIS Parent Vue as they are finalized.

I appreciate your support of our early release days. Today, Monday 9/23 is our first early release at 12:35 PM. I know this is not easy on our families, but will significantly impact the completion of professional development (30 hours of coursework) required by the Virginia Department of Education for our teachers. It will strengthen our classroom instruction in the new framework for literacy, impacting reading and writing lessons your children receive.

Blue Star Welcome week is celebrated across FCPS this week. We look forward to welcoming and celebrating our military families at an upcoming morning breakfast on Wednesday, October 2nd.

CES Kickball Kickoff is This Friday 

Grab your tickets today on the PTA website. Don't miss this special event where our Remers Rockstars compete against Strubhar's Superheroes. We will be on the McLean Football field for our 4th Annual Event this year. 

Tickets are $15 per person. Sales are limited and available for online pre-purchase only before Sept. 23. Wristbands will be distributed to your family before the big event! Adult supervision is required; this is not a drop-off event.

FCPS Cares is an opportunity for parents, staff, and community members to recognize those who go above and beyond to help others and show they care. We invite you to submit your story so we can all acknowledge the outstanding work of amazing Chesterbrook staff.  FCPS Cares Program

Sharing Additional Opportunities TJHSST - Investigative Science Opportunity Grades 5 - 8 

We are TJ Investigative Science Outreach, a student-led organization at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. We will be hosting our 12th annual invitational science fair on April 5th, 2025.  Students in grades 5, 6, 7 and 8 are free to participate. 

Participants who sign up will complete a research project of their choice and present at the fair in-person on April 5th, 2025. TJ students help the elementary and middle school students prepare for this fair by holding multiple sessions to teach them important skills in STEM like brainstorming, collecting data, presenting, writing an experiment summary, using statistics, creating an experimental diagram, etc.

Join us for our first interest/brainstorming session on October 11th, 2024 at 6:00 pm. We will be holding this session both in-person at TJHSST and virtually through zoom. During this session we will go over the goals and guidelines of this fair and introduce students to a multitude of project ideas. All interested students should sign up using the form at the link.

Principal's Message

Our week has been soggy, which is impacting outdoor recess and our Kickball event we had planned for this Friday. I hope the excitement for our big event will continue into October when we were able to reschedule our event on 10/10. Please see more details below. 

Tuesday evening, Amy Vallath, Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, shared information on the levels of service for students. If you missed the meeting and would like to review information, please reference our central AAP site.  We have another meeting on 10/16 to share information about the Level IV referral process.

Over the course of the first quarter, we have been collecting data through beginning of year assessments while students have started all units of instruction.  All 1st through 6th grade students will be receiving interim reports on October 10th to help provide parents information on how your student is doing and note any areas of need ahead of our first quarter conferences. We are hoping to also provide the data on the beginning of year math and reading assessments for 1st through 6th grade students at that time. Kindergarten students are just starting assessments in October. We will send more information when assessment details are coming home, including an opportunity to attend a parent coffee on assessment data and how you can support your child this school year.

Chesterbroook Tutoring Team

 Chesterbrook is lucky to have three outstanding teachers join our team to support students in math and reading. Rachel Edwards (left) will be joining Teresa Foeckler, Reading Specialist, to provide reading interventions to students.  Amber Boyd Vincent (middle), joined us in January of 2024 and will continue her work as a math tutor, along with new tutor, Meredith Houff(right). We are lucky to have the experience and support they bring to our students needing intervention. Teachers will be communicating with parents if there child is receiving intervention.

4th Annual Kickball Kickoff Friday - Postponed

We have been tracking the incoming weather,  hoping conditions would allow for an incredibly fun Friday evening. Unfortunately, the latest forecast does not look promising for a safe and fun event.

Location: McLean High School Football Field.

Doors open at 5:30 PM, Event start time 6PM

Math Olympiad (4th, 5th & 6th Grades)

Chesterbrook Math Olympiad, led by teachers Mr. Treacy and Mr. Gaba, has a strong success record. The team will meet weekly, compete in five math contests, and encourage students to expand their math knowledge and problem-solving skills, with occasional parent participation. More information is coming!

Who can join: Chesterbrook 4th*, 5th and 6th graders (*though the concepts can be challenging for 4th graders)

When: Friday mornings (7:45 am-8:30 am) starting October 11th through March 21st.

Tuition: $160/student Registration will start soon!

Continental Mathematics League (CML) 2nd & 3rd grades

Led by teachers Ms. Hamsher-King and Ms. Leneave, students will meet weekly, practice CML questions, and take part in three meets with six questions each, fostering problem-solving skills while collaborating with students from across the United States. More information is coming!

Who can join: Chesterbrook 2nd and 3rd Graders (24 students max. per grade)

When: Friday mornings (7:45 am-8:30 am) starting November 8th through March 14th TBC.

Family Science Night - Need for Volunteers

October 22nd the Children's Science Center Lab is bringing their Family Science Night Program to Chesterbrook.

We need SIX more volunteers to move forward with this event! Volunteers are needed from 5:15 - 7:45 PM to set up, assist students with activities, and clean up. Please sign up HERE to help with this exciting event. We hope to see you there!

GMU Space Education Outreach Program for Students, Grades 4-8

The Mason Space Exploration Center is a scientific outreach center partnered with the George Mason University Department of Physics and Astronomy and the NASA Landolt Mission. We aim to educate local students on technological skills and code literacy and raise awareness on space exploration related matters.

We are thankful for those that serve our country and welcomed our military families for a Blue Star breakfast this week. It was a wonderful morning connecting and hearing about experiences our families bring to the Chesterbrook community. Enjoy some pictures from our event this week. 

SPEED, TRAFFIC and PEDESTRIAN CROSSWALK STUDY

I need to ask for help from our community over the next week. We have a traffic study being completed by the McLean District station happening over the next week, most likely early next week.  This study will evaluate the traffic flow and need for a crossing guard to support students safely walking to school.  We need to show that this is a need for our community by being present and walking/ biking to school next week. We will have a culminating event for National Walk to School Day on Friday, 10/11.

Please, spread the word of this crosswalk/traffic study - I know not everyone takes the time to ready the messages in this newsletter, so please spread the word to those living in closer proximity to our school. I have been working with Delegate Rip Sullivan's office, Vinson Hall Administration and School Board Member, Robyn Lady, as we seek safe pedestrian routes for our community. We appreciate your support and your voice.

National Walk to School Day

Default Plan Needed in PUP - still missing some students! 

Afterschool Activities:  Add plan change for the date(s) they have an activity but do not change their default plan.

Attendance Updates in PUP -  Add plan changes for the day if absent, coming to school late or leaving early.  

PUP is vital for office staff and teachers to know where students are and how they are going home for the day.

Space Exploration Summer Camp

Is your 4th, 5th or 6th Grade student interested in Space Exploration?

Solar Saturdays @GMU - a 2 hour workshop designed to ignite your child’s passion for space and science. Sessions include: exploring one of the largest on-campus observatories on the East Coast, using a state of the art telescope to observe the Sun, and creating a scale model of the Solar System. More information and how to register can be found here. GMU also hosts a Mason Space Exploration Center (MSEC) Summer Camp- more information is found here with dates soon to be announced.

Free Immunizations for All FCPS Students

Safeway Pharmacy will be providing immunizations for all FCPS students at no cost! Parents or guardians may schedule an appointment and provide consent for their student(s).

The immunization clinics are being held at Frost Middle School on:  

• Tuesday, October 8, 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
• Saturday, October 12, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Principal's Message

Thank you to all of our Chipmunk Families that joined us for our 4th Annual Kickball Kickoff at McLean High School last week. While I had to miss the big event this year due to the rescheduling, I am thankful for all the support of staff and our PTA as we come together to support our community and have so much fun while doing so.  Thank you for our PTA leads that helped make this possible. 

We have a staff development day Monday, as our students are on holiday for Indigenous People's Day. We look forward to seeing everyone back on Tuesday. 

Looking toward the end of the month, we will end October with a few spirit days scheduled by our Student Ambassador Spirit Committee. We wanted to send these out so you can prepare for our students to show their spirit with fun and festive outfits. 

I can use your feedback on ways we can support you and your child(ren) this school year.There is a survey below and linked here. Please complete this as soon as you are able.

I look forward to seeing many of you at our PTA meeting this Thursday.  We will begin at 9:15 in the cafeteria. We would love to see you!

National School Lunch Week Promotion 10/16

On October 16th Chesterbrook will celebrate National School Lunch Week.  To promote healthy school lunch, we will have an event called "X Marks the Tray".  Lucky students who find a sticker on their tray will get a free cookie.

FCPS Immunization Clinic New Date Added

An additional clinic date was added: Monday, October 28, 3 to 7 p.m.

Students under the age of 19, with a scheduled appointment and parental consent, must be accompanied by their parent, guardian, or another adult over the age of 19.  Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are highly encouraged to avoid wait times.

Federal Impact Aid Survey

On October 21st the electronic version of the Federal Impact Aid Survey will open to parents in ParentVUE.  Please complete the survey ASAP.  Thank you!

TJ Invitational Science Fair for Grades 5-8
UPDATED date and Zoom Link

TJ Science Fair Interest Meeting has been rescheduled to Friday, October 18th, 2024 from 6-7PM. It will no longer be held in person, only virtually through Zoom. 

TJ Investigative Science Outreach will host the 12th annual invitational science fair on April 5th, 2025.  Students in grades 5-8 are free to participate. Participants who sign up will complete a research project of their choice and present at the fair in-person on April 5th, 2025. 

Join us for our first interest/brainstorming session on October 18th, 2024 at 6:00 pm via Zoom. During this session we will go over the goals and guidelines of this fair and introduce students to a multitude of project ideas. More information can be found on the TJHSST Science Fair website.
