Principal's Message

We hope that summer is settling in and fun plans are on the agenda for our Chesterbrook Chipmunks, families and our staff. We will miss our staff and families that are moving on and wish you all the very best. It's been a pleasure to support your children during this school year. While I'm getting a lot accomplished and was easily able to take some time last week to celebrate my daughter's high school graduation, the school is too quiet. Sharing my family photo with you as I'm a proud mom of a University of Tennessee bound young adult. Hard to believe how quickly these school years pass.

The planning for the new school year started way back in late winter and we are excited to begin renewed and refreshed in August. It's been great to meet many new families that will be starting at Chesterbrook in August.

Wishing you a wonderful summer!

Sincerely,
Stacy Kirkpatrick, Principal

Congratulations Pat Pence, Administrative Assistant

This summer, Mrs. Pence will be retiring from FCPS. Pat has been an incredible support to our staff, students and families over her eight years at Chesterbrook. The care and concern she has put in to making sure our staff have what they need and taking any little task she can off their plate, allowed our teachers to focus on their students.  Her dedication is going to be hard to match and certainly her smile, kindness and warm heart will be deeply missed.

We wish Pat a retirement filled with amazing travels, more time with her family, long walks with her dog Izzy and much joy.  She has earned it and will truly be missed.

Summer Office Hours - Summer Registration Note

Chesterbrook office will be open with limited hours (10-1) this summer and by appointment. Our school building is closed to programs this summer, so appointments will be needed as we help support you with limited staff.

This summer our wonderful Administrative Assistance, Pat Pence, will be retiring as of July 1st. Chesterbrook will also be closed while the building is under renovation for HVAC. Please reach out to Mrs. Kirkpatrick if you need to make an appointment or call our main line at 703-714-8200 and leave us a detailed message.

We encourage any families that need to register students for the 2022-23 school year to reach out to Mr. Troskey ASAP to set up a registration plan and time to bring in paperwork.

Message from Mrs. Kirkpatrick

The excitement continues to build as we plan in preparation for our opening.  While we are still seeking a couple of monitors for school support, we are fully staffed with teachers. Dates are set for many activities and we are looking forward to filling our building with our students and filling our classrooms, cafeteria, playground and hallways with laughter and learning.

I have to being this note with a tremendous note of gratitude to our Summer Quest and Bridge/SOAR team of teachers, support staff and our PTA for supporting our students in summer instructional and fun programs. I must also thank the Kent Gardens administration for providing us space while our building was closed to programs this summer. Kent Gardens was inundated with two additional summer programs on top of their own. If your child participated in our programs and you see Mrs. Jennings, please share your gratitude for her incredible organization, work and management of the program. It is not an easy undertaking to do this work, much less off site. She worked to ensure all supplies were delivered, classes were staffed and students had what they needed daily. Without her leadership and many hours behind the scene, this program would not have happened and I am incredibly grateful our students had this opportunity this summer. Thank you Mrs. Jennings!

NOTE DATE CHANGE- Due to scheduled facilities work, we will need to postpone the NEW Family coffee scheduled for next Tuesday morning on August 2nd. We are rescheduling for Tuesday, August 9th at 10am. Mrs. Thomas and I are excited to meet many new families and also provide a chance for you all to meet.

Our PTA board is hard at work and we are collaborating on brining our community back together again through many events while also working to bring back many opportunities for our students to engage and learn outside of the structured classroom instruction. If you have not yet thought of joining our PTA, please consider being part of this amazing group that is an incredible foundation to our school support. Join our PTA through their website.

The theme for this school year is "The Best is Yet to Come." As we are on the horizon of a new year, we are

CES Summer Update 8.6.22

GovDelivery1 month 4 weeks ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Message from Mrs. Kirkpatrick

This coming week we look forward to seeing many of you at a couple of our welcome back events. We will host our new family coffee on Tuesday morning at 10AM and our New Librarian meet and greet on Wednesday morning.  Please note our building will be closed to all staff and community members on Friday and Saturday, August 12th and 13th for room HVAC work. The upcoming kinder playdate previously scheduled Saturday will be moved to Tuesday, August 9th at 6PM.

This week's summer update includes a staffing update for the upcoming school year. I have received a number of emails asking about numbers, especially in kindergarten, and I needed to ensure information was solidified before sharing it with our community. Each spring and throughout the summer I work closely with our region office to monitor student registration and grade level numbers. This helps us ensure we have the correct number of teachers and support staff to meet the needs of each student. This summer we have seen a shift in our 1st grade growth which is wonderful, requiring us to add an additional teacher. We have also seen a shift in kindergarten where the enrollment will only require two classrooms. The best news is we can keep our current staff in place with a couple of shifts.

Introducing our instructional teams for the 2022-23 school year:

Kindergarten: Ms. Kuduk; Mrs. Soulos; Special Education Teachers Ms. Garrett, Ms. Kohout

1st Grade Team: Mrs. Hancock, Mrs. Strubhar, Mrs. Wei and Mrs. Limbaugh; Special Education Teacher Ms. Garrett

2nd Grade Team: Ms. Butler, Mrs. Gales and Mrs. Hutchins; Special Education Teacher Ms. Garrett

3rd Grade Team: Mrs. Jankowski; Mrs. Hudler; Mrs. Miller; Special Education Teacher Mrs. Gallo, Ms. Kohout

4th Grade Team: Ms. Flegas; Ms. Glass; Ms. Logan; Ms. Nalewanski; Special Education Mrs. Montana Damerell, Ms. Kohout

5th Grade Team: Ms. Eichmeier, Mrs. Hamsher-King, Ms. King and Ms. Scrabis; Special Education Ms. Boehm

6th Grade Team: Mr. Gaba, Ms. Mabile, Mr. Treacy; Special Education Mrs. Park

Last week this part of my message was cut off, so I'm including it this week. The theme for this school year is "The Best is Yet to Come." As we are on the horizon of a new year, we look forward to helping our kids continue to grow in social emotional well being and increase their academic abilities in all areas. The growth mindset will continue to be at the forefront of the work with do with kids and this theme will hopefully resonate throughout the school year.

The Best is YET to Come
Y= Be YOU!

E= Education - Helping our students set rigorous educational goals. What growth goal do you have?

T= Teamwork - Collaborative teamwork helps us grow!

If you are looking to get involved, we have a few opportunities listed in this newsletter. Enjoy these last couple weeks of summer and we will see you all very soon!

Sincerely,

Stacy Kirkpatrick, Principal

Last Call! CES Grade Level Contact Directory Opt-Out

Each year teachers are asked by many families to provide parent contact information, which can be very helpful in planning playdates or parties outside of school. Room parents will also use contact information to coordinate class activities and parties coordinated with the grade level teachers. If you would like to opt out of sharing contact information with your grade level parents, please complete this google form. Grade level contact information will be shared with parents through schoology once it is ready.

Drop off Procedures

The first day of school all staff are ready to assist and guide your children to their classrooms.  For the safety and security of our staff and students, parents are not allowed to escort children to class but we welcome you to take those special photos outside.  Please keep our entrances open for students entering the building. If you are walking children to school we ask you to release them at either the flag pole or area at the bottom of the kiss n ride/bus loop or area by the gym, so we can keep our entrances open.

Pickup Procedures

Parents that are walking to pick up children afterschool should wait by the trailers or the flag pole.  We will have staff there ready to assist you. Students will remain in the gym until parents are checked in. Please have a piece of paper with your last name written in large letters with the names of your children below. This will help us quickly identify your family and reconnect you with your children.

Children may not be picked up between 3 - 3:35 as we are wrapping up the day and getting set for dismissal. If there is an emergency, please contact our front office.

Breakfast and Lunch $ Account

Have you deposited money in your child's meal account? Add money to your child's account using www.MySchoolBucks.com Once the account is open, parents can check the fund account at anytime.

School Volunteers and Visitors

Volunteers in the building will be prescheduled and, as needed cleared through HR with a background check. Any volunteer that has the possibility of working with students directly without direct supervision of a staff member is required to complete a background check.

Visitors must enter door 1 and share the reason for their visit before entering the building. Upon ringing our front doorbell, you will be asked to identify the reason for your visit before the door is opened. All school visitors will need to check into the visitor system prior to entering the school.

Outside visitors are not permitted to visit the playground or to observe students from the parking lot or other areas on campus. Please know we take the safety and security of our students and staff very seriously and while you may want to peek in on your child during the day and drive your car to the top lot above the playground, this is alarming to our staff and we are vigilant with outside visitors on campus. Parents are welcome to check in with their child's teacher via email during the first week if you are anxious on how your child is transitioning.

CES Parent Handbook 2022-2023

Our handbook is a guide to help parents navigate the basics of the school year and our school operating procedures. Our procedures are in place to create a safe, organized and structured environment that maximizes learning and social interactions throughout the school day. Please be aware of the handbook to help us support all children.

Walker / Bike Parent Permission Form

Chesterbrook is a bus only school due to the fact Kirby road can be difficult to navigate with heavy traffic. We do not have a crossing guard as all areas have bus service.

This form is ONLY needed if you request that your older child (typically 4th - 6th grade) walk or bike alone to school. Students should live close to the school and have travelled this path alone prior, so they are comfortable walking/biking the route.  Parents walking their children do not need to request permission. Students traveling alone are required to go directly to their home afterschool. Travel to Starbucks or the shopping center afterschool is not allowed.

Students that had permission in 21-22 will be granted permission automatically once the updated parent form is received for this school year.  A new parent permission form is required each year.

PERMISSION FORM

Please email forms to Mrs. Remer or provide a hard copy to the front office.

Kiss N Ride Procedures

Students may not be dropped off on Kirby road, in front of the school or side streets. Parents are welcome to park and walk their child to the sidewalk.

Kiss N Ride entrance and exit is a right turn only to keep traffic moving smoothly along Kirby road. Exit is also a right turn only.

During our  KISS AND RIDE times, 8:30 - 8:50 and 3:35 - 3:50, we ask that parents either use the pool parking lot to or a legal and safe U turn on Kirby road. U Turns are legal in areas where you can safely see oncoming traffic and usually at openings of other roads.  It is suggested you can make a Uturn most safely at our bus entrance area. Please do not UTurn on top of the cross walk area to keep this area safe for walkers.

During our opening, please make a family name tag with your last name written in large letters with the names and grades of your children below. This will help us quickly match up families walking to pick up or driving through Kiss N Ride.

Reminders from FCPS and Chesterbrook Covid Mitigations

The health and safety of staff and students continues to be a priority. As we continue to navigate this year we will return to a pre pandemic setting with cafeteria seating for social interaction and collaborative settings within the instructional environment. It is important for parents to monitor the wellness of their children and keep them home when they are exhibiting signs of illness.

Staying Home When Sick

FCPS continues to require families to review the Daily Health Screening before sending students to school. The 5 Day Isolation Period will also continue for COVID positive students and staff.

When students return on days 6-10 they will eat in the pod area spaced out from other students or our pond courtyard so we can maintain supervision while promoting a safe eating environment for all.

Supports for Students in Isolation (StreamIn/CheckIn)

Chesterbrook teams will share information with families on support of students that are home during periods of isolation. We want students to continue to learn if they are able to complete work and engage in instruction. We also want to encourage students that do feel very sick to rest and teachers will be sure to catch students up upon their return. Please know we are here to support either situation for our students and will work together once again as a community.

COVID Case Notifications

FCPS will no longer send a daily or weekly COVID case update. Parents/Guardians will only receive an email from their child’s school when several cases of COVID-19 occur in a single classroom. Individual case reports will be available on the FCPS COVID-19 Dashboard on our website.

CES News Update 8.24.22- Important Communications -Pickup Patrol & TalkingPoints

GovDelivery1 month 1 week ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Chesterbrook Families,

We hope your children are settling in and excited to be back at school. It is so nice to have our classrooms filled with children.

We want to share some important information to ensure our communications are supportive of our families and students needs. Last year we communicated via Twitter any late buses and now are excited to share an new tool, Talking Points texting service, to support quick text communications.

Please read this important information to ensure you have updated all information for dismissal protocol and signed up for the new texting tool. We aim to provide efficient and supportive communication to keep all families updated.

Thank you,

Stacy Kirkpatrick, Principal
Farris Thomas, Assistant Principal
Holley Remer, Dave Troskey & Cindy Flores, Office Team

PickUp Patrol (PUP)

Parents,

Chesterbrook Uses Pick Up Patrol to coordinate transportation plans such as late arrival, early dismissal pickups or changes in afternoon transportation.

In our first two weeks, it is important for students to get into a routine and understand their afternoon transportation plan. Avoiding playdates directly after school in the first two weeks will help as we settle into routines. If you need to share a change in dismissal plans, please read more about our system.

PickUp Patrol saves a great deal of time  in the office and reduces interruptions in our classrooms—while also providing you with a convenient way to make changes to your children’s dismissal plans. Most importantly, it helps us ensure that our students are safely dismissed to their correct after-school destinations.

Use the PUP web app for:

ATTENDANCE: full day absences, arriving late or leaving early.

DISMISSAL CHANGES: Submit changes to your child’s regular dismissal plans. For example:

  • A student normally rides the bus, but is getting picked up today.
  • A student usually goes to aftercare, but is leaving early for an appointment.

How it works:

Initially, you will register for an account if you do not have one created last year. At this point set your "Default Plan" to be the permanent mode of transportation. Whenever you have a change to the Default Plan, you’ll submit a change through the PUP app. When the plan is submitted, the school will be notified and your child’s teacher will relay the change to them.

Getting started with PUP:

  1. REGISTER: Chesterbrook has sent an initial PUP registration email to families.
You should have received a registration email within a day from PickUp Patrol with a link to set up your account. The PUP web app is free to parents and you can use it from your smartphone or computer. PUP is not accessed through the app stores. Instead, for easy access, follow the instructions in your registration email for how to add it to your phone’s home screen. We will resend the sign up email at the end of the week for any families still needing to register. Please note the registration email will time out if not completed within their designated time frame.
  2. ENTER DEFAULT PLANS: Once you register, log into your Pick Up Patrol account right away to confirm your child’s default dismissal plan. It’s important that you complete this step so that we can accurately dismiss your children.

Thank you for using PUP to make safety a priority and to ensure our dismissal process is efficient for all our students.

If you have any questions, please first check the PUP FAQ page. If you still need help, contact us here in the office at [email protected] or PickUp Patrol at [email protected]

TalkingPoints Texting - Important Sign Up Needed to join Chesterbrook Group!!!

New this Year!  We will be using the two-way messaging app TalkingPoints to communicate any important school wide updates (including bus information). You can download the free TalkingPoints for Families mobile app or opt in to text messages (standard text message fees apply). Please see below for specific directions for the app or text message sign up.

Signing up below will register your phone number to receive Chesterbrook Elementary Texts through the "Talking Points" app.  The app will translate it for families speaking a different language. We plan to use this text for quick reminders and notification of bus updates.

We will begin using talking points immediately for communication. We will not be tweeting out bus information. We will be using this system to directly provide a text to your phone. This application provided by FCPS should be a great tool to improve our communication.

We would love for all our families to join. When the office/admin team send a text, parents will receive the text and may reply which will be sent directly to our team so we can quickly address any needs.

Positivity Project at Chesterbrook

What is The Positivity Project?

The Positivity Project (P2), is an organization dedicated to empowering America’s youth to build positive relationships by recognizing the character strengths in themselves and others. Their vision is to help schools and families cultivate citizens and leaders who will enhance our communities and country.

At Chesterbrook, P2 is utilized as a school wide endeavor to help build a community of caring, happy, and connected students. It is a holistic model that partners educators, students, and their parents together. As a team, we teach students about character strengths vocabulary, and concepts. The Positivity Project is used in the classroom alongside our House Points System to reinforce these character strengths in our students and build a school defined by positive relationships!

How can you help?

We would love for you to take an active role in your child’s character education by tapping into P2 for Families/P2 Para Familias. We will begin with our intro week for P2 the week of 9/5 and our first trait, curiosity, the week of 9/12.  By using the character strengths vocabulary and having discussions about the concepts at home, you will help your child understand their strengths and be able to recognize the contributions of others. We will share information on P2 throughout the year to help you support your child and engage in family conversations about the character strengths throughout the year and what makes us all unique individuals.

Students Rights & Responsibilities

We are extremely happy to have your child in our school with us this year! This week all students will have an overview of Student Rights and Responsibilities with Mrs. Kirkpatrick and Mrs. Thomas.

FCPS’ updated Student Rights & Responsibility booklet is now available online and in the ParentVue section of the Student Information System (SIS). The SR&R booklet explains expectations for student behavior, and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment.

Each year, we ask parents to review, sign, and return the SR&R to their child’s school. In ParentVue, you may now download and digitally sign the SR&R. Every parent/guardian with a ParentVUE account will see the SR&R upon login to ParentVUE until the SR&R acknowledgement has been completed.

Once you log on, you will see the following message:

Your name in the digital signature box must match the parent/guardian’s first and last name in SIS exactly before the signature will be accepted.

Please take a moment to log into ParentVue in your child’s SIS account to access the SR&R. Signatures are due by September 30, 2022.

Please contact Farris Thomas ([email protected])if you are having difficulty accessing the booklet.

Join us for Kickball Kickoff

The event will be held on September 30th with a rain date of October 14th. Please consider signing up to help make this a success:

Principal's Message

This years back to school night was a huge success. Thank you for the many families that attended our PTA meeting and were there to discuss our budget and some brief plans for the coming school year. I have been working closely with the PTA board to build a cohesive plan to support our staff and students throughout the year. At the foundation of our work is to build upon the collaborative communications each family to support your child.

Please join Mrs. Thomas and I on Thursday, September 22nd for our September parent coffee. There will be an option to attend via zoom. Each year every FCPS school develops a School Improvement and Intervention Plan. This year's plan has been posted and in the process of county approval. We have also built a budget to meet the goals of the plan in wellness and academic growth. A portion of this budget is funded this school with a Federal grant provided to all school for Covid recovery and other budget items are covered within our allocated FCPS appropriated funding. Along with our plan, we continue goals to provide students with access to extensions and rigorous curriculum to meet their academic needs. We look forward to monthly coffees this school year to share more information information with you.

FCPS School Year Calendar for 2022-23

SEL Screener Notification and Opt Out

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) commits to supporting all students’ mental wellness and social and emotional learning (SEL). The School Board has approved a screener to review students’ skills and experiences in these areas. FCPS staff will use the screener to identify strengths and needs for students in grades K-12. The screener provides information regarding students’ experiences and how staff can support their needs.

SEL skills include self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. The screener will review these skills, as well as students’ relationships, feelings of belonging, feelings about their school environment, and mood. These factors are critical to positive academic, social, and emotional success.

To review what the screener looks like by grade level, please go to the FCPS SEL Screener webpage. The SEL Screener window for Fall is October 17- November 4th, 2022.

For more information, please connect with your child’s counselor:

Heather Lomelin, Counselor for Grades 1,3, and 5: [email protected]

Beau Buchanan, Counselor for Kinder, Grades 2, 4, and 6: [email protected]

Please respond no later than October 16th if you would like your child to be opted out of the SEL Screener, the Opt Out is good through the calendar year. The Notice and Opt Out form can be accessed using this link.

Important Reminder - PickUp Patrol (PUP)

All parents must update their DEFAULT pick up plan for their child. Anyone who has not updated will receive a new email asking you to update your plan. This email is sent to the email address on file.

PickUp Patrol saves a great deal of time  in the office and reduces interruptions in our classrooms—while also providing you with a convenient way to make changes to your children’s dismissal plans.

How it works:Set your "Default Plan" to be the permanent mode of transportation. Whenever you have a change to the Default Plan, you’ll submit a change through the PUP app. When the plan is submitted, the school will be notified and your child’s teacher will relay the change to them.

Use the PUP web app for:

ATTENDANCE: full day absences, arriving late or leaving early.

DISMISSAL CHANGES: Submit changes to your child’s regular dismissal plans.

P2 Character Strength
of the Week!

This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Open-Mindedness.  Open-mindedness means you like to consider new ideas and try new things. You examine things from all sides and don’t jump to conclusions.

To practice and encourage the character strength of open-mindedness with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.

Chesterbrook Food Share Program

This year we will be bringing back our Food Share program, which was on pause during the pandemic. Your children will be able to participate in a powerful program that takes place in our school cafeteria every day at lunchtime.

The Chesterbrook PTA sponsors a program called the Food Share where your children are encouraged to safely store any uneaten, packaged food or whole fruit in a designated refrigerator, as opposed to throwing it away.  Each week our school community saves fresh, healthy, perishable food that is delivered by parent volunteers to the Share of McLean Food Pantry, where it is safely stored for their Saturday distribution. This program teaches our children the valuable lesson of thinking about those who are in need in our community, while also providing an important lesson about conservation. Organic waste that gets buried in landfills is the number one cause of methane in our atmosphere. Our students are collectively making a measurable impact with small acts of kindness each day.

Thank you for your ongoing support. We look forward to seeing this program back in action to support our community.

Reminder: TalkingPoints Texts - Schoolwide Group

We currently have 215 families registered to receive schoolwide notifications through the talking points app.  Your classroom teacher will be also sharing a way to join their class specific list.

We would love for all our families to join. When the office/admin team send a text, parents will receive the text and may reply which will be sent directly to our team so we can quickly address any needs. If your need is not directly pertaining to the text sent, please contact our office team so we can address via phone or email.

The Virginia Board of Education will mark your child chronically absent if they miss 10% of the school year or more regardless if absences are excused or unexcused.  Chronic absenteeism is a factor in school accreditation and is reported in online report cards for schools and school divisions.

We recognize that it is important to reconnect with families far away, but keep in mind the costs to your child’s education if they miss too much school— and the message you will be sending about the importance of attendance.  If a trip cannot be avoided, please minimize the number of learning days your child will miss out on and note the following:

  • FCPS laptops may not travel out of the U.S.
  • Your child’s teacher is not obligated to provide work for your child. Online learning is not an option for missed instruction due to travel.
  • Your child will be withdrawn after 15 consecutive absences and parents will have to re-enroll upon return. As such, you will lose access to ParentVue, Schoology, etc., and your child may be assigned to a different class/schedule upon return.
  • If visiting a High-Burden TB Country for 4+ weeks, your child cannot return to school until they present a negative TB test results from an American doctor to the school office.
